Heres a model I started working on. Ive been on a crazy Metroid kick lately, so I thought I would do a model to go along with it. I'm usually more of a Kraid fan, but Ridley looked more fun to model. Lemme know what you think.

I like the look of it so far, although I have not seen the original art of what you are talking about. Keep it up.

Looking good, got any reference pictures?

Here are the four reference images that I am using. They are all from the Super Metroid artwork.

Hey, another SCAD student, fancy meeting you here :-)
Looking great so far, matches the original well. Were you planning on doing any animation? I'm curious how you would handle the wings. Oh, and I checked out your site... pretty cool. I like the suit of armor, especially since it's all NURBS. Never had much luck getting them to look good.

an update on how its coming
pyraxis- I don't think im doing any animation, but i definetly am planning on doing a few poses with him. For the wings, I think im gonna shoot for the ones on the third reference image down. Im mostly using that image as a main reference, and then refering to the other in areas i cant see, like the ribcage chest thing on the last image. Thanks for the crits!

Starting to look good...The metroid games are some of my favorite games of all time. How many poly's is he currently?

You should give metroid on the gamecube a try. It has a really great model of ridley in there (I believe they call him meta ridley in that game, but he looks exactly the same). Couldn't find any screenshots of it though.

added some wings.
thanks for any crits guys! Keep em coming, no sugarcoating (I dare you to make me feel bad)
twindragon- <edit> whoops, my bad, I read the poly for just the body segment. The whole thing is around 3000. sorry
supervlieg- yeah, i love metroid prime. I playing through it currently with the fusion suit on. The Ridley in that one is pretty cool. He's sorta cybernetic looking. Definetly one of my favorite games.

looks great!!! man, metroid rocks. one of the best series ever created. I'm looking forward to mission 0 for the GBA and of course M prime2, if we ever get to see anything on it. all i've heard is talk. anyway, great lookin mesh. hope to see it finished soon.

Okay, here goes....
The tail needs a lot more geometry, the low polys are way more obvious there than the rest of the character. Also where's the eye? "Eyes are the window to the soul" and everything... they're one of the first things people notice about a character. I only see one bump on the skull and in the concept art there are two... is this intentional? The back ridge looks a little odd without the mini spikes. Also, I don't see much muscle structure in the chest, though this could just be the angle. There should be pecs to control the movement of the wings, more defined ridges for the ribs, and a narrower stomach and hips.
But seriously man, don't get me wrong, this is starting to look really cool. Looking forward to seeing it with textures.

always been a fan of ridley myself.. ever see the prime version of him? not something you'd want to meet in a dark alley. looks awesome.
your model looks nice for being so low-poly -- i've never been able to do good lowpoly wings so good job!

finally had some time to work on it today, started the hands. There still a little flat on the top, but i think they're getting there.

wow! the detail from the in game scene is pretty intense! I hope your model can capture that because it would be awesome!

I think you are doing a good job so far, Ridley is a cool character and he can be done a lot of different ways.
I can't wait to see him finished.
And yes, I am a huge metroid fan too.
