View Full Version : Particle Cache size in Maya 2011

I'm building a cache for a relatively simple (but large) particle scene and the cache is coming out at over 150 GB. I have made many scenes like this in the past on previous versions of Maya and the cache results has never been on this kind of scale.

Doers anyone know if Autodesk have changed the way that Maya builds cache files?

BTW in not using Nparticles.

no, it's the same as before.

If you are using nParticles you can reduce the cache size by filtering out attributes that you don't need. (classic particle caches always contain all arrays on the particle system)

You could set cacheableAttributes to just "position" for the smallest size. Things like age, position and id will be in the cache and for rendering if the color is based on these then you need not cache color per particle. If you were computing rgbPP with an expression, however, then you would need to cache it as well, which means using the "renderable" cacheable setting. If you want to be able to append to cache and you have custom arrays that affect the dynamic behavior, or have custom rendering attributes then you will need to cache all.
