I'm trying to create some realistic fog that I can then shine a light-beam through. Is fluids to best way to go? Any help is appreciated. Here's a link to some ref

the fast and best way to do this "light effects -> light fog" in (for example) SpotLight. Best to ask it in maya rendering threads.

If you have the luxury of a farm or render times, you could take a stab at using a Mental Ray Parti volume rendering solution.

Perhaps utilizing Mental Ray and a parti volume render might work well in this case?
