View Full Version : A bot and it's ball!

It's been a while for me, I used to be a lot more active in the community but I stopped because of life, university and other stuff. How ever I still love CG and now I'm trying to make myself a little iOS game for the iphone using the UDK.
I'm really hoping for this project to be successful to improve my living situation. Anyway enough blah about me lets talk about the game.
The game started off as a simple puzzle game and has involved into a puzzle/exploration story with characters.
I won't get too into the story now but the player is in control of a tiny robot who has crashed landed on earth and must recover all the parts of his spherical spaceship to get back home.
Here is the little bot, the character that the player will control most of the game.
The Space ship
The bot and the ship for scale.
The antagonists, they want to capture your bot and the ship so don't let them catch you!
Here's the first level which is really a tutorial level. Our bot must escape the antagonists space ship but crashes on earth in the process.
Let me know what you think, and note that the texture work is very early and will probably go under a lot of changes.
I'm hoping to have about ten levels in the game, I have started modeling about half of them so far but the ones I have already started are not ready to be shown yet.

Looks really good. I'm really impressed (and a little jealous) with your work. Keep it up!

Holy crap man, where have you been?! I remember I use to enjoy your podcasts and was recently wondering where the heck you are up to.
There are some stretching textures and everything looks kinda dull due and monotonous. But like you said, the textures are still a WIP so I'll be following this. What framework / engine are you using for your game?

AlucardAssassin: Thank you for your nice comments
aeres: Oh wow, I feel flattered, I always felt nervous about the podcast, I was afraid that people downloaded it and laughed.
What happened to me was life, I got into an intense art school and that started taking over my life work and social. Suddenly I couldn't do the podcast anymore because I would just feel so exhausted.
I some how ended up in Australia for a year because of a girl, then we went to France and some how I started a fashion business selling unique made on order hats and that had to take a break for a while due to family issues.
Now here I am, back in Switzerland looking for a job and hoping this game can be the steppping stone to me starting my own studio.
Sorry all that info.
But yea the textures are very early, I should have an update on the ball and ship tomorrow. I'm using the UDK which I'm comfortable with, I've made some levels that entertained myself for quite a bit but never released anything. Now is the time :)
Gameplay wise there will be two modes, ball mode where the player is in control of the ballship which will be rolling down a scene and the player will have to dodge obstacles and collect objects along the way.
The second mode is bot and ball mode, here you'll be incontrol of the bot and you must navigate the level to find the missing ship parts. The bot will have to bring his ship with him by "pushing" and "pulling" it. This mechanic can be used to kill enemies and solve puzzles.
I hope it is sweet and catchy, but sometimes I think to myself can I really do this project and then I realise I'm not going to find out by not trying.
Here are some new images!
The first level on earth is the crash land on the roof of an abandoned home. The ball will roll down until the gutter and the player must make sure not to fall off or into holes, while collecting objects along the way.
The setting is early morning, I want the lighting of all the levels to evolve over the game from morning till night.
here's all of it
Once the player completes that level they'll fall onto a table inside the abandoned house.
Here the player will start exploring with the bot looking for the parts for the ship and other things to get it functioning again to be able to go back home.
Some much more to do!

I realised the scenes are a bit too dark so I'll make them brighter for the next update but for now another update!
I've been busy working on the textures for the Protaganist bot. I think I might call him "3E" or "ThreeE".
I want him to look like he went through a bit of hell since he was held prisoner for a long time before finally being able to escape and crash land on earth.

Another update, I've been doing a lot of behind the scenes stuff which is boring to show like importing models, backing textures, setting up the engine scripts and etc.
I'm happy because I rigged the robot, gave him a walk cycle and was able to control him in the editor, it's still a bit wonky but it's a nice milestone for me.
I've been importing and building the first level in the engine, I started lighting it and I'm liking it so far. Let me know what you think!
