View Full Version : Modelling without Blueprints...Tips

I have been modelling thinks in Max for about a year now (mostly cars), but so far everything I have modelled had good blueprints (top, side, front etc).
I want to try my hand at modelling a robot, but I only have a concept drawing (see attahced, by John Zeleznik) and not full blown blueprints.
Does anyone have some tips/suggestions for me.

I don't know the extent of your drawing skills, but if you can draw, take the image you have, then sketch a likely front, and side base on the image. If you are good at extrapolating, you should be able to bust something close out fairly quickly. The rest....in Max would be easy to do.

Thanks for repling loqutos. Unfortunatly I can't draw at all. :sad:
I think I might just have to try modelling away and eye ball it as I go. Not the best method, but the only one I can think of.

My suggestion: try it! The result don't need to be a masterpiece, only the proportions have to roughly right so that you can start modelling. It is not so difficult to take a pencil and draw some lines - I thought the same way like you a time ago but I recognized that practice is everything.
So go out and search the Internet for some tips and tricks in doing sketches. Even if your first tests look terrible, EVERYBODY can do some easy drawings, you only have to believe in your patience and in trial-and-error ;)

Thanks for the reply 3dDragon. I might give drawing a try.
In case I can't draw anything :) does anyone have any dragon blueprints. I could probally use them for some reference also.

i think it's great that you have decided to drop blueprints...
i believe that in most cases they kill creativity... i mean... if you didn't make them.... ;)
anyway... the best i can do is to tell you my approach to modelling organic models....
with this dragon i would recommend to build very low poly model of full body... keep vertex count here as low as possible because you will need to spend a lot of time moving them and experimenting... in this phase just take your time and get the proportions right... this is what i call a "concept mesh"... once you get this done properly everything else is purely a rouitine.... after this plan edgeloops if you plan skinning it and just start adding detail... observe curves you want to make with it's maximums and minimums, convex/ concave...
knowledge of anatomy is always usefull...
