View Full Version : The Face Of War, Oleg (3D)

10-14-2003, 05:24 PM (

This scene was made more than one year ago. Its concept is based on Leonardo da Vinci's drawing. Software used: 3D Studio MAX and MetaReyes (a modeling plug-in developed by Reyes Infografica - ).

Wireframe view of the scene:

I haven't seen the piece by Da Vinci, but this look very good, much like a painting.
It seems to be blurred in some places, and soem bits are surrounded by haze, which looks a bit out of place. - like the horse/sheep head on the chest plate.
Amazing work though...

Really great image! I love it! After seeing the wireframe I would really like to know the polycount for this scene; it seems pretty dense.:)

10-14-2003, 06:04 PM
Amazing work! As soon as I saw it I thought of Da Vinci even before I read your post! Top stuff!

10-14-2003, 07:00 PM
fatastic, very painterly

10-14-2003, 07:24 PM
Great stuff!

10-15-2003, 09:22 AM
well done:applause:

I found the picture you referenced. You did a great job of creating 3D from this 2d image.
It is one of my favorite Leonardo images!

Мне особенно нравятся доспехи. Это действительно очень красиво. А вот лицо не очень.

Бьюсь об заклад что здесь полигонов больше 1.5миллиона...

Nice work! (too much green for me) but this is good and very well done!

10-15-2003, 06:43 PM
Wow, awesome work, although i agree, adjust the blurriness a little and u could very well have a winner (if it wasnt one already :) )!

10-15-2003, 07:49 PM
blur/dof is good actually.

Dear colleagues. thank you for your comments.
This scene contains a bit more than a million of polygons, but I didn't try to optimize it.

Hi Oleg. I saw this work of yours in gallery. I love it :buttrock:
This version has little gloom FX that bothers me but the other stuuf is good  .

10-16-2003, 10:35 AM

10-16-2003, 10:37 AM
:surprised the amount of detail is just stunning, magnificent piece

just a question, how did it take you to finish this??

10-16-2003, 10:39 AM
awesome. the only reason I'm posting is so that your number of post thingy will go up. that way you can feel even better about your work, and I cna be a nice guy. I really like this piece, I havent seen much like it. And I like the use of green, it's almost uncommon. Unless you like the hulk. :) :D

My only two crits are that the actual Da Vinci painting has a lion instead of the horse or lama that you have. It's kinda hard to tell because the lower jaw is sort of fuzzed out. But you can see the upper canines. Also the the mane of hair kinda gives it away. The soldier hair also looks out of place. Looks sort of too irony. Besides that, its awesome

lion/lama/horse (

I don't feel the color matches the feeling of the original piece. Instead of that highly saturated tone of yellow-green, try something a bit more muted such as the traditional browns and yellows, with low saturation. It seems like you want the skin color to be somewhat belivable, but you don't really want the armor to have the same appearance. Could you explain. I'm confused. But you have the right premise of copying the masters!!! That is one of the great ways to learn so much. The model looks good, I haven't looked at the wireframe yet though, its your colors that need to be changed if you plan on giving the image a classical feel. Find some other pictures by Leonardo to find the colors he used, mostly browns, dull yellows, and dull oranges. Keep it up

10-16-2003, 03:16 PM
sooooo pretty.....
have never heard of this reyes plugin before, in what way did you use it to make the image? was the whole thing modeled with it?
i like the green and painted-look of it.

10-16-2003, 05:02 PM
Very nice!

The only crit i have is that the tip of the nose in the original painting is a little sharper, giving him a sterner look. the eyes are also a little more squinted.

Apart from that, really beautiful!

10-17-2003, 12:24 AM
Wow, really nice! The only crit Id have to give is the coloring on the face. It apears to be a flesh-toned face with strange blotches of red and yellow. If you lowered the contrast on those areas it would really help the piece. Still, amazing piece!

10-17-2003, 12:55 AM
this is DAMN F@#King COOL!

thanks for sharing...

Outstanding quality Oleg! The model, the lights, the textures, colors. The presentation of all these just couldn't be better!
Просто изумительно!!!

this is one of that moments when an animator sees a good job made by other and ask himself: am I really an animator?

Congratulations Oleg, not only by the greatness of your work, but also for the commitment and the good taste
