3ds Max 2011 x64 - Student Version

I work in a scientific laboratory and we're using max to recreate animation where video is not allowed. I'm trying to recreate hand motion from the joint angles using biped, but need to define the initial position that the joint angles are measured from. The only joints that have proven difficult are the first knuckles on the hand.

Our joint angles are defined so that (0,0,0) is aligned with a line from the pivot point of the wrist to the pivot point of the knuckle. So imagine a line from the pivot point of the wrist to each of the knuckles of the hand and line the fingers up with that line.

I initially thought I could draw a line connecting the two pivot points and then align the axis of the node with that line, but am unable to draw a line. Can anyone help me figure out how to define this initial position in max?
