View Full Version : FXWars! TRIBUTE, FREEFORM entry: Parting Red sea

hmsabry12-06-2010, 10:40 PMHey guys, here i will add my work in progress for "Parting Red sea" shot from "The ten commandments" i will use Maya and Realflow.. My friend Omar will do modeling with zbrush for the shore and the rocks... and he also will add his updates here. Shot references Ten commandments shot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pZWC-UBe_4 Prince of egypt shot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6u2nA1eaCc i like the parting solution of Prince of egypt's shot ... more than 10 commandments.. so .... lets see :) i will do some experiments .

hey guys ...

i made a test in a small container .... and in a small area not animated.... i mean in depth ....
i didn't add yet splash ... just grid particles..

have a look and put your critique .... :scream:

Looks awesome so far! How are you affecting your fluids and getting that curling motion?
Keep it up!

Hey Alex ... thanks buddy ...
i'm using Tractors + Attractors to form the water up ....
and i'm using noise + attractor to make the fluid spread away
and fall back ... and this is which make the fluid going curly
i wish you caught the idea ... :lightbulb

i'm still doing some tests ... to figure out how to improve the fluid's
motion...

but actually what i don't like the idea of proportions ...!!
because in this wave's height ... its not logically the water move so fast up
with this speed although the height should represent more than 20 meter at least..!!
this movement makes it looks like 20 centimeters :argh: like a small fountain for
home ..!! ehehehe

i will push harder :banghead: to fix this issue ...

Hey really nice first test. Doesnt it look like larger scale if you simulate at a higher framerate and give the whole thing more gravity!?

And sure you are right .... Narnia has ... amaaaaaaa :scream: zing shot ..!!
i saw it "Digital 3D" ..!!..

i'm keep thinking about it ... and how it works ...
and yes ... when i saw it in the trailer i knew that its a very good
reference ...

Thanks man ..

Pre-test #2

*this is a very rough "dynamics" motion, timing ... just figuring out best approach
i can get ...

All critiques are really appreciated .. :)
I'm still working ... and improving ... and thinking hard to get a closest solution to

i did some more refinements on the model and upresed the divisions
now i will start workin on the beach

did you begin in the shore ..?? and its rocks ..??

Omarios
12-20-2010, 09:25 AM
yeah i started placing everything in place my friend
the ocean floor and rocks
its turning out much better
i have even adjusted on the model and made it much longer on the rightside
and re sculpted some more details
it needs some bushes and dead branches
the test u added is very very nice man
i love the curling effect of the water
very nice
cant wait to see the render my friend
cheers

thanks maan :D
still improving ... i will add more details ... in sim.

about the foam ... sure i will add ... and also mist ... but this will be last step in sim.
but my main issue is to have a good effect ... with a very nice motion and flow first
then i will think about the foam, mist ..and.(( the infinite water ...!!! issue)) but i have some
good ideas :lightbulb in my pocket need lots of :wip: experiments ..!!!

tamer tohamy likes the simulation
but suggested adding a start to the simulation
because right now it feels as if its a cut frame

hey man i really love this new test
coming out great man
i would suggest adding exploding water spray in the front
sort of like a hot geyser

Looking good. Maybe add some small trees on the rocks to better define the scale.

Hey man it's been a while but it's good to see that you are doing some cool vfx.

That's looking pretty sweet. The next update gets better and better dude. I like the way is flowing so far. Of course more particles will definitely help but I guess for testing purposes this is fine. Keep going

Cheers

all of those are under grid level

Are you using Realflow 5 to do the water sim? This is going to have to be simmed at a ridiculous resolution to look the correct scale. Heh.

hmsabry
12-23-2010, 11:48 AM
@ Omar:
Great work buddy  ...
but you will suspend your progress until i use your models and give you a feedback on either
doing some edits or keep going on the rest of our extra objects ...

@ Mathio:
Thanks buddy ... and yes you are right ... we already decided to add extra details like "as you said"
bushes and small trees ... to enhance the layout...

@ Martin:
hey buddy ... I'm glad that you passed by and leaving me a comment
i really appreciate your comment "about sim res" ... and you are definitely right ... this is just a test
so i made it low low res sim. .... so i can sim and reset many many times FAST ..!!

@ Daniel :
Yes i'm using realflow 5 ... and a big YES you are right!! ... i'm now updating my sim to the final res.
@ 6,208,304 particles ..!!
it must be as you said!! "ridiculous resolution" :banghead:
my machine is simulating in a long time ...!! but it looks like we have a looooooong time to finish the
challenge

LD50
12-23-2010, 12:48 PM
Im exited how your high res sim will turn out. But i think nowadays "ridiculous resolution" is more like 100 million particles ;)

hehehehe 100 Million :D !!
it will sim. in couple months on my machine :banghead:

I'm trying to push more res. BUT .... bit by bit and see how far details will go ..
till now ... 6M ... it looks " ok:Daaaaaaay ..!!" and the machine is simulating slowly ..!!...
but for me ...sim time "till now" is OK... maybe i will raise sim res. more but after i see
the result of this sim.
let's see ...

LD50

It does not necessarily take forever! Igor Zanic did a flood sim lately with 45 million particles and the sim time was about 32 hours on a I7 machine. But hey not every shot needs such a particle count, so as im said ecxited how your final shot will look like :)

Hey guys ..
sorry i was very very busy .. i'm having lots of works these days
but i will do my best to finish this shot :)

@ Martin .. thanks buddy :)

This is completely new approach ...a new idea i've been thinking about it
it will rely on compositing more than sim.

hmsabry
02-03-2011, 09:58 AM
new update ...
AGAIN .. this is a rough idea to achieve the effect but with relying on compositing.
you will see that i made a duplicate from "one bank of water" and made a tiny offset in time and made duplicates in depth ..
i just want to see how far this idea can go ... to optimize particles and sim time ..!!

any feedback is appreciated ;)

new update ..

hmsabry
02-08-2011, 01:07 PM

i made a Maya scene .. and i made camera movement ((i'm thinking about animating the camera like someone was there and he captured the scene with his handy cam.. )) so its kind shaky ...
its only camera test ... ((rather than using static camera .. ))

what do you think about "proportions" ..??
do you feel the scale of the water ..?? is it huge enough ..??
speed wise..??
camera shake ..??

MartinRomero
02-08-2011, 06:34 PM
That's going to really help you sell the effect, Make a little less shaky however get the jitter at certain points, kind of like emphasizing the actions, Action then Reaction.

Great stuff, keep it up

sorry for being late ..
i'm doing my best to finish everything before deadline ...

anyway ... this is a new update
this is my final base mesh 250 frame ... and i'm working on shading and then i will add splashes "as a separate mesh" and mist
lets see :)
