hey guys currently using maya 2011 and windows 7

im currently rigging my character and am having issues with the knee. the default position looks great but as i bend the knee its knee shape stays the same. so if i wanted to pose my character sitting down he'll have this nasty buldge. any tips on how to shrink the knee in someway?

Sounds like you need to make some blend shapes.

You can also use a "pose space deformer plugin" by Michael Comet

It does a great job after the intial set up.

Steven Stahlburg use to have a tutorial online on how to use wrap deformers to solve some of the bending issues aroudn shoulders and knees.
