View Full Version : Concept SMC 3 (11.2.2010 to 12.1.2010)

Hello fellow modellers,

A new month a new concept. I've seen this concept for a steampunk train quite some time ago, and I fell in love with it. I mean, it's huge!

So, this month we're doing a steampunk train. The authors website is (, so feel free to check out other of his amazing work.

And as you can see, there's only one view, so try to visualise how it looks from the top and front view. I hope this won't be too difficult :)

Time limit is 5 hours. As before shading, texturing and lightning are not included in the time limit and are optional. So you can spend as much as time on them as you want.

Please post your WIPs, problems, comments about your or others workflow in this thread.

You know steampunk is something that I am really starting to like, not sure why but it kind of gives you room for inventive thinking I guess..

Phew, that was nearly enough time. One hour or two more hours and this might have become a pretty neat model, for my standarts... well, it's practise I guess.

Hi, im rather new to modeling, anyway im trying to participate in this since steampunk is a cool theme^^. I took all 5 hours but couldnt finish it, anyways here is my model: ( (

Love the entries, looks good.

If you're guys run out of time, you can always finish the model and post it here. Just post the "finishing" time as well :)

I love steampunk. It's steam, it's punk, it's awesome.

Hey guys, I put in another few (7) hours, to get the undercarriage and some minor details right. The concept didn't really make sense down there... ah, it's so ahrd to stop working on a model...

Woot, awesome! I love your interpretation of the passenger part! And also how you integrated that wierd wheel that didn't make any sense to me into the chassis.

Hey guys, it's up to like 17 hours now and I think I'm calling it done. It's not like I'm entirely happy with the detail, but I like it. Enjoy!

You put in much more detail i had^^ looks very realistic especially the mechanical part to move the train.

Oh wow, I've done about an hour or so on it, and it looks horrible. Once I started working on it I realised that you really need a good concept to work from, because figuring it out where each piece goes takes a lot of time. That's a good lesson for me for our next concept SMCs.

Now you guys just need to put some textures on it, render and put it in your portfolio :)

Started and came halfway today, think I am gonna aim for a low poly version. What I am striving for is to simplify forms to be able to solve them better. I think it is too easy to add things that doesn't need to be there, really challenging things that.
I guess that comes down to topology aswell, sure is difficult though.

2 hours and 30 minutes this far, need to solve some things better and hopefully I will make it so that I can add all the cables within timeframe. lol. :)

Damn, I had some arrays which I forgot to apply when I joined the mesh, really pisses me off. I lost some ladder steps and some details on the balcony and some bars on the back of the train.
Well lol you get to see the start of the ladders in the finished one here, beginning of the array.
Btw I freestyled some parts....

I used the train model for this beneath, a wannabe bookcover sketch for another forum.
A mix of 3d and 2d. :)

Yey, actually got a bit of free time in the past week, and started doing the train. This is about an hour and 20 minutes of work. I've kept making mistakes and redid the whole front part a couple of times. It really shows that I haven't been doing my 3D homework.

I just hope, that I'll be able to finish it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Amazing entries, guys! I'm havent been active on the forum for quite a while but I'm definetely going to join in the challenge before the end of the month.. Now if I can get some time off in this crazy end of semester at school!
