View Full Version : Modeling a twisty slide - MAYA
10 October 2010, 11:44 PM
I'm doing a model of a park near my house and I got to the little plastic twisty slide and I'm not quite sure how to tackle it. Both the slide itself and the little hood over the top of it. My minds drawing a blank so any help to get the ball rolling in the right direction would be a huge help!
Here is an image of the slide I'm trying to model, both sides and middle view.

Hi. It looks like you could get the slide portion by simply extruding along a curve. Then attach the inside points to an inner cylinder. Good luck!

Creating a polygon helix might help get you started.

earlyworm: I was thinking of a helix too. Wasn't able to get it quite right. Maybe I'll try it again.
Jon842: Never thought of trying to extrude along a curve. I always forget about curves, don't even really know how to use them. I'll look into it and see what I can come up with.
Thanks for your help. Any other suggestions/ideas are welcome.

I have a thought and I think it will help you.
Take a cylinder and use the cut face to to make two cuts from top to middle and from middle to bottom slantly.
merge the two vertices in the middle.
Remove the opposte half circles in the top and the bottom. This will give you a curvy shape around the cylinder.
Then extrude it and you will get the shape.......
Yeah....You can bevel the curvy shape on the cylinder and then extrude it and get the depth.
Hope that is clear and helpful. I am in a little bit hurry. If I am wrong show me.

that looks like a great idea to get a start. I'll have to give it a try when I open maya back up. Thank you so much for the idea. If I have any questions about it I'll post back about it. Looks fairly easy but I'm sure I'll have a question when I get into it. Thanks again!

I got the slide modeled I just used a pole in the middle and worked a helix around it. It took me FOREVER!!!
I tried your way cg-cnu but I couldn't get it to work. Not sure if I wasn't following your instructions correctly or what the deal was but I tried and was unsuccessful so I went to the other idea which was also a pain right in the ass.
Thanks for the ideas!
here is what I got
