Junior Character Artist

Obsidian Entertainment is looking for talented, self motivated Junior Character Artist to join our growing team of RPG developers. The Junior Character Artist will be responsible for creating aesthetically pleasing characters and creatures through their expert knowledge of shape and form, proportions, color and design principles.


High proficiency of a major 3D software (Max, Maya or XSI) and Photoshop

4-year degree form an accredited college or university or equivalent industry experience preferred

Solid High and Low poly modeling skills

Solid knowledge of character modeling as related to game development

Solid grasp of color theory

A strong understanding of rigging and animation principles

Ability to be resourceful and come up with creative solutions

Ability to be receptive to art direction and critiques from project art leads

Strong foundation in traditional art

Strong organizational and communication skills

Ability to rapidly master proprietary tools and development pipelines

Passion for gaming


Exceptional visual and technical understanding of 3D modeling and texturing of characters and creatures

Experience with a proprietary level editor i.e. Unreal, GECK, etc.

Working knowledge of ZBrush or Mudbox

Concepting Skills

Scripting Experience in MaxScript Python or MEL

Strong skills in traditional fine arts, including but not limited to figure drawing and illustration


Create a wide range of high quality characters and creatures

Model, UV Map, texture and create the materials for character assets

Work closely with Art Director and Level Designers to ensure the visual target is met or exceeded

Complete work under reasonable deadlines

Portfolio Requirements:

A web portfolio that demonstrates a range of high quality 3D and 2D art

Examples of modeled, textured and rigged characters and creatures

A range of hard surface and organic models

Life drawing samples, anatomical studies

Breakdown list with details such as polygon and texture budgets

Solid craftsmanship

Portfolio Plusses

Samples rendered in a major game engine

Character development breakdown, reference, base, detail, topology, UV

Character Art Concept Samples

Real-time Shader Examples
