View Full Version : Desert Eagle

10 October 2003, 01:50 PM
This is my new ingame model . The famous desert eagle pistol . The model itself has 3360 polygons and one texture 1024 * 1024 px . The gun is for Half life 2 mod called Parallel future . You can see some early progress on . The model was done in Max 5 , and texture was painted in Photoshop 7 . I hope you like it .

Sorry dude , I forgot to upload it .He hehe .

10 October 2003, 03:33 PM
model looks ok but the skin is lacking
and it looks cartoony in some places (the grooves)

10 October 2003, 08:23 AM
Thanx for the comment Dennispls . Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the realism of skin , I would realy apriciate something more constructive .

Maybe you overdid it a bit with this scratched metal things you put in every edge. Furthermore get rid of this blueish metal look, I have never seen a metal glance in this way. The model itself is nice!

10 October 2003, 01:56 PM
Thanx for the suggestion cANt , I will try to fix the metal and delite some skretches . You can expect new render soon .

Warhawk, I think gun models are subject to overly harsh crits due to their intense proliferation. I for one, think you shouldn't change a thing, it looks flippin awesome. Except for the wood texture maybe... yeah its crap.

can I get a w00t for the HL2 mods? eh? oh yeah.....

10 October 2003, 02:00 PM
sorry to say this, but the gun doesnt look as if it has 3k polies, i am saying this because i have seen similar guns done with half as many polies as you have.

as ffor the skin, try to lower the highlights in the edges. compared to the rest of teh skin, the clip's skin doesnt look all that good, maybe put some more work on it ?

10 October 2003, 02:45 PM
I think the guns is flying :)

10 October 2003, 04:59 PM
Thanx everyone for the coments . I will try to fix the skin and give it more realistic look . And probably the contrast is to big becose of lightning and HDRI setup . So I will show you some wireframes and new look very soon . I am curently very buisy . Thanx again .

Isn't that a little excessive for a game gun?

I mean, you've got some obvious places for optimizations, most notable the hole that the bullet comes out of (whose technical name I'm suddenly blocking on). And a texture of 1024x1024 is pointless unless this gun is going to stretch across the entire screen and be viewed in a rez above 1024x768.

If this gun is being held by the character, it's not going to take up much of the can probably reduce the texture to a 256x256 with absolutely no loss of detail even at 1600x1200.

Keep in mind that a UT2k3 PLAYER model is about 3500 polys...and they take up much more of the screen, and require more detail than this.

Having said all that, its an awesome model and a great texture. It looks very nice in the render (although remember, you're not getting HDRI in-game, so make sure your texture doesn't rely on doesn't look like it does, though.)

10 October 2003, 06:38 PM
Well here are new pictures of improved texture . The metal has more reflections and the render is without HDRI . And this gun is actualy for HL 2 , so the polycount is OK . Some of HL 2 guns have around 6 k or more . I will also delite all te invinsible polys in first person view .

And wires :

10 October 2003, 06:40 PM
I was unaware the poly counts went that high...that's incredible.

Where'd you get the engine specs?

10 October 2003, 06:48 PM

10 October 2003, 07:09 PM
Definitely much better. Nice to see you stick with it. Keep it up!

10 October 2003, 08:58 AM
Ghostscape I guess I was missinformed about polycount on first person models . Anyway I will delite almost half of faces , which will lower the polycount to the right limits . And If I am right the HL 2 engine suppoorts HDRI , but I am not sure if that is going to be calculate in real time .

cANt thanx . I was reading some of your tutorials about making good looking metal so I took your advice . Great and helpfull tutorials .

well, for 3000 polys (those are triangles aren't they?) it looks pretty "edgy", better save some polys at the back of the slide and make the round parts rounder...
heck I beleive my desert eagle looks rounder with below1000 triangles

now imagine a 1024map on there and it has at least the same detail, I still don't get it why people model those little grooves on the guns you won't notice it ingame anyways

edit: if you look closely to my model you can see I used more polys on every curve than you did and I'm still below 1000 tris

10 October 2003, 08:28 PM
Gah, I had a big post, it got eaten...

Long stroy short, I htink you can cut polys from a lot of places, I've circled them in red in this diagram

10 October 2003, 09:10 PM
Thanx for the replays . Well I am very happy about the look of my gun so I wont work on it any more . But I will optemize the model when HL 2 will come out .

10 October 2003, 01:38 AM
it IS an excellent model ;)

10 October 2003, 09:39 PM
magazine look small toanyone else ?

10 October 2003, 09:09 AM
Warhawk , your model is very good. But I think 3000 poly. high value for this model.

10 October 2003, 12:32 PM
yes it is
same detail can be acchieved in around 1600 1700 polies
btw it now looks like your grooves go out instead of in

10 October 2003, 01:24 PM
Wow more replays . That is awesome . You guys give me the motivation to work some more . Keep them coming . Yes I agree about the polycount , but as I have already sad that the gun will be optemize once the HL 2 will come out, I will also make the magazine a little longer . I had a hard time finding some references about it , so I improvised a little bit . if someone has some good refernces about desert eagle , I would be very gratefull , if you could post some urls . I will also try to fix the skin , but curently I am working on another gun so I have a little time . Thanx again for the replays and critiques .

you can search any pistol reference in internet. For example , in google or pistol manufacturer sites. Type in image search section in google or altavista. You can find more images about pistols. I found good images about Glok 17 in google.
