I am sorry if this sounds really basic
i am trying to create some comic style trees and i just can't get the look right, any idea would be great, this is sending me around the bend.

i like this style of tree, i saw it on a video of a sining frog that is think it was zero gravity did.

Hi again! i did some search and a came back with a pretty good tutorial about modelling a tree, it's located here (http://www.3dm-mc.com/tutorials/tree/)
I think it could be useful to you, at least the trunk section.
For the folliage i would use (to match the image you've send) an extruded box in many directions with a meshsmooth modifier (in MAX). Textures seems to be a mix of procedurals, there are many tutorials about texturing out there. I hope it was useful. Send the results!
