View Full Version : Beginner UV Mapping problem
09 September 2010, 05:27 PM
This is my first post as I just started learning 3dsmax on my own. I had a previous install of Max and I didn't have any issues with this so I'm wondering if it's some setting I'm unaware of.
The problem is with texturing a head/body. I unwrapped and got a map which seemed fine, and I left the map on top and put some colors to see how it would show up

I went to the material editor and added a diffuse map with all the default settings and I get the map tiled all over the place everywhere except where I unwrapped. I tried it on the first head I made and had a similar problem of it tiling everywhere (on the old install it worked properly). If I add a UVW map modifier on top, it goes to the head as well but is still tiled all over.

If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it. Sorry about the models it's the first 2 ones that I have done so there's a lot of room for improvement.

Could you post a screenshot of your material editor settings?
this seems to be an issue with texture channels, but i can't be sure.

Result with a UVW map on top of the unwrapPlacing an UVW mapping on top of an unwrap will override it's mapping coordnates and thus render it obsolete.
How did you create the model? Head and body in one piece or seperated? Looks like two pieces to me, then unwrapping the head and attaching to the body resulting in mixing up the model's vertex order which would explain the messed up layout.
You could do so but you should collpase the head's modifier stack so the unwrap coordinates got preserved.

Material editor settings are HERE (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_S_c7N9VKv64/TKqBKcSLqkI/AAAAAAAAAYc/d4u7coCq7jk/s1600/Materialed.png)
Yes they were modeled separately in the same workspace then attached so they are all the same object now. I unwrapped the faces of the head after I merged the 2 objects but I will unattach and unwrap/collapse and see what happens.
Thanks both of you I'll update with how it goes.

As 2 separate objects now. I didn't merge the objects since the issue appears on the head alone with no body also. Included material editor in the screenshots this time.
