Hi! is anyone know how to created global illumation in Maya without any plugin?
i know XSI has their build in gobal illumation but i couldn't find maya has it.
can anyone help me out?

hmmm, never used maya, but I guess U can try the "Spinning light trick" with maya too!

Hmm , i guess nobody told you yet but Maya doesnt have real global illumination. The spinning lights as daniel said will do the trick up to a point but its not even close to the real thing. go check out www.pixho.com , and install the GI joe script , which automates the dome lighting setup , its a pretty nice script.
other than that if you have $5000 laying around you can buy mental ray for maya.
actually if we look at things from the bright side , due to maya's crap renderer you might wanna focus on rendering to layers and getting the look you want in post. Learning how to play with your images in post is very handy and in the end the results are much better than "lets turn up GI and check the render 3 days later" method :).
One day Alias will wake up and put HDRI rendering to the package , that'll be the day.....

Just for a quick way to do a ok setup of G.L. Set up 6 direction lights one in every direction. Including one on the top and bottom. So basically you have light coming from all angles. Just inlarge them to fit your scene. Its just something one of my teachers told me to do one day until I could get my hands on a real setup. Hope it helps.

Check out the raydiffuse plugin for maya.
very very cool...but not true GI as I understand it, but very cool..

Has anyone here tried building GI shaders to use in conjunction with a light domes type of setup? I've been digging into Maya's renderer for the past several weeks and it certainly seems to me that Maya's renderer gives you access to all the info you need to create GI shaders.

I've had some pretty good results from a plugin called raydiffuse. It uses the Monti Carlo algorythm. http://www.3dluvr.com/lightengine3d/index2.html
it's down right now, as 3dluvr is moving servers or something, but check back...Looking forward to using Mental Ray..

There is a similar discussion in the Maya section of this forum
Possibly several of you could jump over there with examples of the Mental Ray work. I for one would love to see it.
