View Full Version : A challanging hard surface modeling problem

08 August 2010, 02:15 PM
I'm working on a cylindrical mechanical part which I have to add detail to. So far so good, but I came across a problem in the mesh. There is a curve which doesn't look as I expect when I subdivide the mesh. Here is the problematic area: ( (

I want to smooth this dip out. Any suggestions?
I'm working with 3ds Max 9.

I'd add more geometry to the problem area, then adjust points as necessary to attain the desired shape. Here's where I'd add some more edges. (

I hope this solves your problem.

the problem area had to be constrained so i just chamfer'd a vertex, added an edge with the split polygon tool and moved some stuff around. :arteest:

Thanks for the help

Dare-o, your suggestion seems plausible. I'm going to try it right away and post the results!
Animasta, adding one more edge loop so close to this one will add to the circular a sharp corner. Unfortunately this is not acceptable.

Thanks, Dare-o! Your topology was right
