View Full Version : Approach to mangroves

From what I've researched, there isn't much out there on how to make this type of tree. The top part if sort of simple enough, almost bush-like, but the bottom is a network of intricately interweaved roots and I'm not sure how to tackle it. Any ideas on how to go about this? I'm good with either Max or Maya.

Thanks :)

For the intricate root network, you might just draw out CV curves by hand and extrude a circle along the CV path. There are probably some vine generators out there that may produce a close approximation. Someone may have even made a paint effects brush out there for this.

I think I saw on RealFlow's website how in Lost they used a simulation to "grow" the underbrush and vines for a certain shot with particle emitters. A solution like this would produce the most natural results and would help with collision detection so the roots don't intersect as they grow.
