View Full Version : Maya slow down with multiple lights

hey everyone! ive been searching around but i cant find the answer (im probably searching for the wrong expressions...

i have a scene (a building), im rendering it with mental ray and arealights. i have one area light per room and it makes the render time much slower.. from what i can tell it is because of the number of lights, even though the light from room A cant be seen from room D, its still being calculated... is there a way to kinda not calculate/render lights if their effects arnt in view?

1 light = 1 min rendertime
17 lights (in different rooms) = 14 min render time...

please help, i have to fix this asap to i can render 5250 frames lol :p

you could just key frames the lights visibility, so ones that aren't in shot are not being calculated.

Are you using Portal Lights?

You could also, alternative to ndeboar's method, put the different rooms' lights on different Display Layers. Then it's a one-click to turn them on or off.
