View Full Version : Impossible to model a 100% Perfect Golf Ball?

Hi Cg folks,

The past hours I have been thinking about why my golf ball modell is not 100% correct, And so far I have discovered that only texture a golf ball with displace map is the correct solution, The problem Im getting is that all the "holes" are not the same size, mostly they are the same but they are some that are not. Im attaching some pictures, If you don`t understand what Im talking about,...

Btw, Have researched mostly all the tutorials out there,,... All tutorials that models the "holes" have this issue, but doesnt seems that noone knows about it or can fix it correct. The one that helps me out with this problem, Thanks!

The reason why these are wrong is because a geosphere does not have a perfect surface, its made out of triangular shapes that wrap around the ball.
Try looking in an orthographic viewport at a simple geosphere with low poly amounts.. youll notice that the hexa's arent all the same shape.. this is why it wont work.

How to tackle this is beyond me.. maybe try it per quadrant by hand.. it'll be hell to model anyway.

You could of course settle with an imperfect ball and make an angle where you won't see it. that much.

Interesting topic! It seems even golf ball manufacturers deal with this issue as well as how to add a parting line down the middle (so it can be molded from a 2 part mold). Here are some pics I found that might be useful:

They appear to push the smaller dimples into areas that they won't be as noticeable, kinda like moving poles around.

Here's the deal. It looks right so it is right.

Nobody is going to notice and based on the above post it looks like it's physically and digitally impossible.

Nice golf ball model. Looks like it took a while.

Agree. It's called "diminishing returns." You spend an infinite amount of time trying for theoretical perfection and nobody notices.
