i use mental ray in XSI, and i get error 362004 an awful lot lately.
usually when applying caustics. im not sure why either though.

Are you sure you set something as a caustic emitter and something as a caustic receiver? This can sometimes screw up a render.

That's an easy problem to get, and I don't think the manuals say anything about it... how stupid.
But the main problem is that your "Reflected color" for your shader is set to black, so black photons go trough and illuminate nothing, so no photon info get's stored... easy.
So, to get caustics working, just pump up the "Reflected color" attribute.

I am not even using caustics. if I turn GI and final gather off it still does it. It kinda makes sufaces have grey triangular patches. it is one poly face.
To xsi guy In maya u dont have to specify wich objects recieve and transmit it does it to everything in the scene automatically transparent to the user. Unlike in XSI.
ANd how come there is no mental ray support page on the web!!!!!!!
