View Full Version : my stupid question of the day..

I am rendering a pretty big scene with a portal light. but 'surprise, surprise' the area light shadows are rendering PRETTY long.
so I am wondering, is there a way to just use the color information of the physical sky and plug it into a light with cheaper shadows applied?
what are the attriubtes to match this as close as possible to the portal light?

If all the portal light is doing is transferring the sun light color, then you could use one of CIE nodes and plug in the kelvin for sun light, which is around 5,5006,000 K. Mental rays converts sun/sky values to linear, so you might also want to shove a .445 gamma correction in there too.

I feel like such a nerd some days.

thank you nick. but I think the portal light got a lot of blue from the physical sky, too.
but the CIE is a good startingpoint anyhow!
