on mia material on the additional color ins lightsurface as self illumination.

glow is really slow in Maya since it's single threaded. Watch your CPU usage for a render - it will be a really slow thing at the end where your cores aren't used. Best to do this in post with an add of of self-illumination pass with compositor glow.

There's a good bit in this about the Nuke and passes workflow I use:

The nice part about doing it with the Nuke glow is that you can set a size threshold so not every little thing emits light glow.
