View Full Version : distance fog using IBL in mental ray?

Anyone have any ideas? I'm using IBL and FG to light my outdoor scene, and have found this http://www.floze.org/2008/07/six-tuts-on-light-and-shade-part-vi.html tutorial, but are there any other methods that are a bit less time consuming to set up? I don't even know if I'm on the right track with that.

Or can I do it via zdepth in post? Just render out a depth pass and...any ideas what I'd do in say, Photoshop, to give a nice haze-like effect with this?

The good thing with the parti_volume is that you can get rays from your lights. If you just need haze, you can do it with a zdepth pass in any compositing software, and you will have a lot more control with really fast renders. Not sure you can do that in photoshop though, I never tried actually... Be sure you render the zdepth pass properly to have good results (I usually render it at a resolution twice bigger, without anti-aliasing, fixed sampling to 0).

Hmm I think I'll go with doing it in post. Do you know how to do it in After Effects by any chance? hehe

Apparently it needs to have the depth information in the depth channel. I never used After Effects but there is certainly a way to copy channels to anothers, in case you render a RGB zdepth pass. Hope it helps.
