ok so working on this pic currently.

first attempt:

after some help i realised there were some problems with anatomy and so came up with this:

tbh i liked the first pic better as the dinosaur had a bit more character but i'll probably tweak it a little in the next update to compensate for this

anyway and C+C would be appreciated thanks

Yep, the pose and character in the first incarnation are definitely better, if a little less well defined. The composition is better too: the man on the right frames the dinosaur rather than leaving an empty space in front of it that makes your eye wander off the page.

Asidefrom the usual 'get rid of the white' comments I think you should go ahead with the first sketch and develop it.

I'm guessing you have seen (and been inspired by) James Gurney's Dinotopia, but if you haven't, definitely have a look. Some of the best illustrations I've ever seen, and very evocative

...I just noticed that on there is an art step by step - he uses oils, but it seems to be a very good technique for getting realistic lighting. Worth a look for anyone on the forum, I'd say.
