Well, they say the fun's in the journey so ... here I go. I have *no* drawing skills - i'm just hopeful that I'll learn alot from doing this.

Thanks Zaryin - its his face thats got him down. I actually think he looks a bit 'French' to my eyes. Like an unhappy old painter or something. Not really enough of dwarf. I'm still working on it. Thanks for looking.

love the style Doug. the character's coming across best in the third dwarf. (number 2 maybe should be a Giant type face?)

I think you're right, third is the best of the bunch. And you know i hadn't looked at that 2nd one as a giant but i think i see that now. Always best to show your work I reckon. I really appreciate the comments you guys!! Motivation to go on.

He is going to be a realy good test for displacement mapping. You might have to use a heavy mesh to get it to work well though. Good luck.

I think you're right John. I think I'm gonna have to model some of those boils/zits right in the mesh. This is gonna be a major test for me I tells ya. (doug wonders to himself, what he has gotten himself into).

Okay gang, as agreed here's the details ...

I'm modeling the hand for my dwarf. Trying to add a control point to the tip of one of the fingers, I select the control point, hit 'y' to insert and it adds the point within the spline not where I want it. So, I hit control x to undo and ...... A:M hangs. Restart the prog, and try the same thing again and ..... A:M hangs.

A:M 2003 10.5h

I'm sending it to Hash now.

hey that's NOT slowly Doug!

You look however like you lathed the fingers? They're a bit pointy ended so you might want to investigate closing your patches off in a different way.

I like the head so far, Doug! (It looks like my uncle.) Keep going and updating the WIP thread.

Maybe make the eyes a little closer together like your sketch.

Can't wait to see how you handle his skin problem!

Okay - I'm really mad now so here I go ...
I made some changes to the head for my dwarf. So, cut half away, scaled to 0 on X, select the remainder of mesh, then hit copy, flip, attach and ....... WAMMO right to the desktop.

Having saved the model previously, i lost nothing. Except time. I tried this about, I dunno, 4 times and exactly the same thing happened.

I'm really frustrated and angry that this simple operation should yield such drastic results. Ridiculous.

THis is what I learned about Copy/Flip?Attach when I kept crashing trying it.
1: Make sure you have no left over splines connected to other splines after deleting half of the model. This is a must. You have to have a clean area for the other half of the model to connect too.

2: Make sure you do not have any hooks connected to the middle spline.

3: Make sure the middle spline is centered and exactly placed on the middle axis line. Also make sure the cps are aligned exactly.

4: when about to flip make sure to crap a cp on the center spline that is closest to 0,0 then hit the "/" key to select the mesh after this.

After doing all this I found I never crash back to Desktop with Copy/Flip/Attach.

By the way, the hand is looking good.

More work done this weekend. Attached is Zitty with his body. I realize that he doesn't look too dwarfish yet, looks a bit like Hank Hill to me right now.

And the head is still boxy, and creasy. Not to worry, as it will be exported to LW and will be as smooth as a zitty baby's bottom.

btw - Zaryin, thanks for the comments. I think you are spot on with my discoveries with Copy/Flip/Attach.

Man, the clock is ticking. Here is my guy, sans the zits. I need to move on to texturing and then rigging and I have no idea what I"m doing with either. Anyhow, crits and comments appreciated.

That's funny I read that last night and thought ... hmm I must remember this cuz it might come in handy sometime. DUHH!

Only thing is I've exported it and put a bit of work into it in Lightwave. Perhaps I'll have to go back into A:M and model those zits afterall.

Lots of stuff done this weekend. Check the link for details.

Do you think the Zits are working? I'm not convinced. I tried Jim's suggestion following the link he provided. Perhaps I need even more splineage to make it right?

I need to redo the ears as the ones I had sucked. Hmm, what else. Oh, yeah hair.

I would like some suggestions to tackle some minor blemishes using A:M materials. I don't have Photoshop or the like so I have to tackle all texturing within A:M.

P.S. I'm going to try and finish this guy off all in A:M. I will be pleaing for help with the rigging soon.

Another update.

Problems: Porcelain material on 5 pt patches. Flipped normals but still getting a 'shadow' on those areas. So, no porcelain for now.

Where do I find out how to do hair?

I still have some odd surface problems. Anyone have any suggestions? Hooch? Buddy ole pal?
