Is there a way to UV hard surface object similar to how there are software to UV organic models?

maybe something for maya? or a 3rd party software?

it just seems that hard surface models are pretty easy to UV there must be a way to automate it.

do a automatic mapping... and merge the areas together you need in one shell...
its a lot of handwork...
