View Full Version : Sleipnir - 8 legged centaur. Anatomy advice.

Hi to all.

I have been working on this model off and on for the last couple of days and would like to use it to improve my anatomical skills and knowledge of zbrush and hope for rigging as well. still a long way to go but I would like to take the time for it. I have mainly been doing hard body where I work and haven't really got the time to keep on developing the soft body skills so after about a year of not doing any softbody I decided it was time to pick it up again and started working on this mix of Odin and his horse Sleipnir. Sleipnir known for having 8 legs and odin being the god of gods in viking mythology. I think it is quite a challenge for myself so thrilled to get some good feedback on it.

thanks in advance

theres a lot of anatomy issues goin on here. his pecs seem a little flat and his forearms are kinda short. the muscle at the top of the arm (the deltoid) would actually move into the pec area connected to the upper outer portion of the muscle. you have a lot of suggestions of anatomy by i think you should go back and study each region a little closer.

Thanks Marcus for the feedback, much appreciated. I reworked the whole deltoid area and made the arms longer as well. I saw what u meant with the connection area of the deltoid reworked that too and looks better now (I think :) ).
reworked the stomach area as well. going in closer bit by bit to get the issues out.

thanks again

I think you need to get a large body of muscle reference together.
The clavicle area is too long and prominent. The abdominal "Ring" looks forced and is nearly overlapping the serratus anterior. Then you need a lot of horse referance.

Thanks Robert for your feedback. followed your advice and spent some more time looking for more references. I had quite a bunch laying around but they might have been too generic so looked up some more specific references for the shoulder area.
I smoothed out quite some of the stuff I had done and plan on doing the same approach for the whole body and horse.
I'm not quite happy with it yet around the shoulders but thought I'd post it already to see if it is heading in the right direction.
The serratus anterior isn't quite in the right place yet either but thought I d fix the rest first

it is hard to put together an anatomical figure that doesn't exist... so i can see where you are having the anatomical problems...

my biggest crit is the four extra legs look just that... four extra legs. appendages that really serve no purpose.

think about the figure, think about his actions, his daily activities. Why would such a creature need that many legs? a spider, for instance, needs the extra legs to keep a firm grasp on vertical surfaces as well as the extra appendages for multitasking (building webs, holding on while wrapping food, etc.) but why would a centaur need the legs?

once that is put together, the location and muscles needed to wrap the appendages will make more sense to you and you will be able to construct it a bit better.
