View Full Version : moonlight castle - WIP

So recently it struck me, that in all my eager to understand anatomy and how light bounces and so on. I have totally forgot about all the important stuff - composition, story, color palette, depth etc.
So Iíve decided that from now on, there will be no point doing any illustrations unless my focus is on these things..
So Iíve started on this illustration, and my goal is to show 2 people, happy that they found a place to stay for the night.. Iím going for a cartoony look, which I havenít played much with before, so thatís going to be fun.. Iím not fast at painting, so I donít really want to start painting the characters before I decide on their poses..
Anyway Ö With these things in mind, what can I do to improve this illustration ?
I'm using photoshop.

The castle silhouette looks neat. The pic is a bit flat atm, maybe play with the elements a bit. Check out the masters of composition, which are strip artists. You can see I am not one of them.

Thanks a lot for the critique..
I like your composition, especially the way you could draw the eye trough that trail of fireÖ
But I also like what I have with the castle being in the background silhouetted against the moonÖ But maybe thatís just me falling into an old trap, of finding some element I like, and trying to do an illustration around that..
Iíll try to rethink what Iím doing..

What I am trying to say is if you have a composition with everything the same size, on an even plane, balanced left to right and with very slight perspective its hard to get movement and it makes it hard to tell your viewer what is going on. Heavy use of perspective and positioning helps draw a viewer into the piece. A member on this forum provided this great link.
I think you should keep sketching and showing the raw elements here in various combinations and arrangements for others to look at.

Thanks a sh**-load Kanga! That second post of yours, gave me a MAJOR huge aha!-moment..
And the link was also very helpful..
So here a some new sketches I did.. What do you think ??

The sketches are telling more of a story dont you think?
That article is a pretty good one.

i think it would be better if you flip this image because of our reading direction, so that the eye follows the pointing hand of the man to the castle and not vice versa. :)

Yes, I think they a telling the story a lot better.. But are they good enough ?
Thanks Bran, that was a helpful tip, i agree, it works better when flipped...
So, should I do more sketches? In that case, what should I think about, and what can I improve?

So I made a few more sketches, and I couldn't decide, wich one I liked the best.. So I decided I would take two, and throw some color on there, to get an idea of the lighting and such..
I think i'm gonna go with the first one here.. any comments og ideas before I try and turn this into a illustration ?? And if this is no good, please tell me.. I don't want to spend hours on this, if it sucks anyway..
