Hey. Awesome work mate. 5 stars from me.
This is def. front page material.
Looking forward to some more works from ya. Congrats!:scream: :buttrock:
09 September 2003, 03:13 AM
Ahh Hi Grid! Nice to see ya.
First very nice picture!
But, some point.
-the Headlights looks to dull, turn lights looks like new
-the plastic on the front bumper looks strange
-the window rubber is very thin
The wheels are just great!
09 September 2003, 04:40 AM
awesome work...but for a car that looks so worn and weather beaten it doesnt appear to have any dents, dings etc..it all looks too straight...rough up the panels a little :D
09 September 2003, 05:24 AM
Good job !!!!
I like how the tires are a little deflated:thumbsup:
09 September 2003, 05:32 AM
reminds me of last week, picking through a junkyard looking for parts for my mk2.
beautiful work, i don't agree with the headlight comment above. i see tons of these all over the place and the headlights look great. however, the plastic on the bumper does look a little flat.
09 September 2003, 05:47 AM
Yeah, i love the texture. First time seeing a real old car in here. Well, need some touch up on the texture. Do some dirt below the doors. Coz, old cars seem to collect dust around doors... Try to put some greyish element...
just my 2 cent.

09 September 2003, 07:04 AM
Finally a car that isn't brand new and shiny!! Good work. The tire textures are done very well.
I like the rust, maybe some more streaks from the rain hitting the rust, will add to the 'weathered' look.
09 September 2003, 07:11 AM
Very good one .... but personaly i think that the front of the car is a littel odd. :p
Anyway good work !
09 September 2003, 07:41 AM
ROFL nice work! Really love it. It's like mocking all those ultra shiny modern cars we see here.
Everything looks ok except those side windows, they should be more inset... Err not so flat... you get the point.
09 September 2003, 07:44 AM
Great texturing... too bad it's a volkswagen.. :p
I prefer Opel, but hey.. who cares! Good work..
09 September 2003, 08:12 AM
Very nice renderer ;) :applause:
09 September 2003, 08:22 AM
Very great piece!:)
Nice texturing as well!
09 September 2003, 08:35 AM
Wow that's really good :)
I have that exact car in yellow and took some reference images, I was going to model it soon when I got the time, but now you beat me to it! :)
Especially love the lighting and texturing, you've done an awesome job!
09 September 2003, 10:13 AM
Thx for the coments, the frontlights looked to new, so i made them alittle dull, maybe i should have made the turnindicators more dull also, but they looked like that on my ref pics on a golf i found on the street, that was from the early 80´s.
09 September 2003, 10:16 AM
Verry, very cool, Grid, as all of your work ! Maibe a little bit too rusty, but that's been said already i suppose. another thing i don't like is the door change (color) plus if the door is changed it should be in some better condition, than the rest of the car, isn't it ? also the windows could use some contrast.
ps. i'm not saying these cos i think i could do it better, but i think you could.. :)
09 September 2003, 10:54 AM
Fantastic work GRID you deserve the front page [just plugged] ;)
09 September 2003, 11:00 AM
Incredible quality! I swear I thought it was an photo on the thumb on the frontpage :applause:
Too bad the full pic ain't perfect :p
But, those who went befor me already mentioned what's wrong with it, so I won't repeat it :)
09 September 2003, 11:01 AM
grattis till förstasidan!
09 September 2003, 11:01 AM
Ho man......Great job.......I love it
09 September 2003, 11:04 AM
Looks good, great work on the textures. I agree those corroded materials need some serious dents in the body work to go with them.
09 September 2003, 11:20 AM
LOL great idea! Well executed
I owned a VW Golf like this as being my first car, many years ago.
Your model is in a better shape as my VW was back then. I had some rubber clamps on the hood to prefent it from opening automatically and blocking the view from the front window while driving. It also alarmingly smelled like gasoline and there was a piece of the engine missing. I had a very good CD player and some 100W loudspeakers in it, so I didn't mind and drove the piece of rust for 3 years, till it finally past away of old age :D
09 September 2003, 11:28 AM
very nice model and materials(you allready knew that).
one thing though, the windows on the right side of the image look abit.. plastic, could be the reflectionsfrom the enviroment or that you used a not 100% transparent material.. I dunno.
nice image though
09 September 2003, 11:29 AM
Awesoooome! an old car not a shiny new one!! I love the feel. THe only complaint and this is to be picky :D The bump map on the paint is a little too high i think. Makes it look like the paint on the car is half an inch thick...
But otherwise it feels awesome, especially how the tires carry the weight of the car, good attention to detail.
09 September 2003, 11:51 AM
two thumbs up for that one :)
great model, texture and render.
only the glasses are a bit of a problem.
even if the car is really old, the glasses will never look that dull and have so few reflections.. i know that from my old golf :)
check the ref:
(ok.. that one looks newer, but check the glass anyway - and no: it is not MY golf.. just any golf from the net)
can you post some wireframes? would be cool!
09 September 2003, 12:04 PM
nice work man
i like the old rusted style
its better than these new shiny looking cars
they are all the same

It looks newer because IT IS newer, it's the 2nd generation of the Golf, not the 1st one used by GRID ;)
09 September 2003, 12:28 PM
ThirdEye_01: i was just about to say that :) the Golf he posted is propably 10 years younger than the one i made :)
Here´s a wireframepic

09 September 2003, 12:40 PM
Hehe, very very cool.
I would get rid of the antenna though... wouldn't that be broken or rusted? Same for the windows edges (the chrome).
Vash T Stampede
09 September 2003, 12:56 PM
it's an old, ugly, rusty car... I love it..
09 September 2003, 12:59 PM
i like it grid!
09 September 2003, 01:10 PM
GRID: Arnold or Vray?
09 September 2003, 01:12 PM
Looks just like my real car! Not the same model, but that exact high quality paintjob.
Bra jobbat! Jag har en Volvo 340 från -85 som ser ut precis så där... :D
09 September 2003, 01:16 PM
looks great, the indicators look fine to me unless you want one chipped and just hanging off by one bolt.
09 September 2003, 01:27 PM
You've got to try and sell that car on e-bay. I'm sure someone would take it off your hands for, oh, I dunno...
... 100 bucks?
09 September 2003, 01:55 PM
Very nice idea! No Ferrari, no Audi TT - just an old and rusty VW Golf. I really like the texturing and modelling (a long time ago I drove this car, but it was a Golf GTI).
09 September 2003, 02:04 PM
You have truly captured the essence of a piece of Sh!t car....
Excellent job m8
09 September 2003, 02:18 PM
that's what i call a great job! Awsome!
that's real eh? no?... ....Gosh!
09 September 2003, 02:34 PM
I have always liked that kind of rusty textures!! You have achieved that effect very well! Good work soldier! :)) I think the only problem is the mesh /it must be rough and beaten/ and the front window texture. It looks very dark and looks like made of plastic.
:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
09 September 2003, 02:37 PM
It's great! But what is keeping it from being perfect is the apparent lack of tire (tyre for you Euros;) ) air valves sticking out through the hubs.
09 September 2003, 02:40 PM
it's beautiful .... my golf die since 3 years :scream:
09 September 2003, 02:54 PM
Your car is realy rusty :buttrock:
09 September 2003, 02:57 PM
waaoooo, nicely textured:applause:
09 September 2003, 03:50 PM
The front geometry though is a little too clean. The grill lines up perfectly with the edges of the hood and the fender is also perfect. I'd mess them up do some minor dents or something to break that part a little. Other than that one thing the rest is spot on.
09 September 2003, 04:07 PM
ThirdEye_01: it´s rendered with Vray
09 September 2003, 04:25 PM
If you add some physical dents and bends on the car, and then increase the contrast of the entire image, I think the work would become pure perfection. Aside from that, excellent job!
09 September 2003, 04:32 PM
I agree about the dents suggestions. i think just a few ould add alot! cool work GRID :)
Could you post a low poly wire?
09 September 2003, 04:32 PM
Signal to Noise: Here you see the airvalve sticking out :)
09 September 2003, 04:37 PM
Nice, Grid. Just don't see 'em in the main render. Aside from details, I think you're texturing is some of the best I've ever seen.

Great render, modeling and texture job! I love the V-ray render look.
- Now for some technical questions. Did you you use GI Skylights, Photon mapping or Radiosity render settings etc? And what was your render time for this scene. Renders with Photon mapping, Radiosity, GI Skylights, etc are a little hobby of mine. I am currently testing out GI renders werein the GI Skylights are not used just the Photon mapping and soft shadows. The renders look great so far and are really fast in one of my GI rendering softwares. And the environments look really clear and noise free.
Again , great work!
09 September 2003, 05:09 PM
Just HDRI for lightning and irradiancemap GI. blury reflections on the car and rendertime just under 20 min on a dual 2000+
09 September 2003, 05:50 PM
Very convincing texturing and lighting.
09 September 2003, 05:53 PM
For some reason i wanna see that front right tire looking really flat. That way it would look like a real P.O.S.
09 September 2003, 06:44 PM
Very Good texture and render but the glass doesn't look so real to me
maybe cuz its smooth and so new 5 stars work:thumbsup:
09 September 2003, 06:52 PM
09 September 2003, 07:06 PM
Grr stop talking about old VW Golf's dying! I just got mine a month ago ;)
Still great work Grid, would love to see some more shots if you have'em :)
09 September 2003, 07:10 PM
09 September 2003, 07:26 PM
very impressive indeed
09 September 2003, 07:45 PM
hey buddy! your air is a little low!!!!
looks great man!
I used to have a 1980 Golf, just like that not quite as rusty tho.
those outside doorhandles are the first to go aren't they?
09 September 2003, 07:58 PM
Nice texture, nice lighting too (even do the fill light should have just a little lower intensity, less reflective object tend to have more shading then the high reflective one) and nice comp.
Dents: I agree
Windows: The way I see it (please correct me if I'm wrong), is that you put a dirt texture on it, but a really uniform one. I think you sould add big dirt only to specify place (near the bottom edge for example)(after all, your car is more rusty then dirty). So you should build a reflection map, for the cleaner place (not necessaliry perfect clean, just less dirt) to be more reflective then the really dirt one. Also those cleaner part should have a much less blur hdri reflection image with more pronounce highlight.
But aside that.... wow... it recall me of an old friend which is dream was to get an old Golf Volk like this one (but white, not rusty I imagine, but that did'nt happen). When is dream became reality, It was not long before it became a costly nightmare.....
09 September 2003, 08:30 PM
I am jumping on the bandwagon, too. Very nice work!
On the other hand, I too had one of these cars (it was called a Rabbit here in US back then), and I know from experience that when one of those black/chrome trim pieces fell off, it left little white plastic brackets embedded in the panel. These were hard to get out / not worth the effort, so I would put those in to the place where your missing trim is. Or, if you decided that you took them out, it would leave holes in the door, and rust tended to grow from these holes, so instead of a solid line of rust you'd have spots growing from the holes.
Also, my car's hood had a steeper curve at the front edge, at least than yours appears to be. I agree, too, that maybe the hood should be misaligned a bit. Oh, and you could put some rust around the windshield seal.
Is there a way to make the glass look older or dirty? Like scratches where the worn-out wipers scraped across the surface? Mine was scored pretty good on the right side because my whole wiper blade would fall off once in a while. :)
09 September 2003, 09:01 PM
looks great except the windows are so perfect looking. If they had some hard water stains on them that would be great.
09 September 2003, 10:02 PM
The lighting an texturing are breath taking.
I only see one problem: IMO, the side windows, the glass material lacks an environment map as reflection. It could be perfect!!
But otherwise a masterful work.
09 September 2003, 03:16 AM
Very nice job on the modelling and texturing in the main. The windows really don't look convincing to me and the rust, though good, looks somewhat contrived and overdone. Also if a car was actually anywhere public in that state it would no doubt have lots of dents and misalignments..personally I think it would be more effective with more understatement but that's a personal thing. Well done though indeed:beer:
09 September 2003, 03:27 PM
bleu: i have a reflectionmap on the windows, but it´s just sky that reflects on them in this pic, maybe i will try a different HDRI.
09 September 2003, 04:04 PM
09 September 2003, 03:20 AM
I agree with the others on the improvements they suggested.
All in all, good work!!
I'm currently working on rusted textures & i want depict paint chips / peels revealing rust - just like your VW Golf.
I want to know how you went about doing the textures. What are the kind of texture maps did you use? Bump, displacement, diffuse, spec?? Did you create the textures in photoshop?
09 September 2003, 02:59 PM
juln: i used color, bump and reflection textures that i made in photoshop.
09 September 2003, 08:38 AM
I like ur material.
Very much detials...
The backgroud somewhat....Umm:shame:
09 September 2003, 10:05 AM
I really like your car. I think it is the first one I have seen here that didnt have a nice new paint job!
09 September 2003, 10:33 AM
great texturing and great model. I think a flat tire and or broken glas (missing headlight maybe) would add to the feeling of a junkyard car.
Great pic, i love it.
09 September 2003, 07:14 PM
It's different, well done, and reminds me of one of my old cars (a Hyndai Pony *shudder*) needless to say it's gone now in fiery mess :) so you get an award for just being brave enough to challenge all of these showroom new cars that passes through here. Nice texture work and attention to details, love that partially deflated tire.
You have received the CGtalk choice award .Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Awespiring work!
upon receiving this award, it guarantees you a spot in the cgtalk gallery hall of fame (http://gallery.cgtalk.com) - which you are now placed
P.S. Please email me @ firstname.lastname@example.org so I can send you the award .psd file
09 September 2003, 03:24 PM
Excellent work on the rust and aging of the car! It looks damn real! I just have some concern with the silver trimmings around the windows, the look too new, for a car that age, they shud at least be peeling or scratched or chipped in certain parts. Just a thought:)
09 September 2003, 03:46 PM
Great works.... Only 3 crits for me...
1. Excesive bump
2.the glass (too clean)
3.The holes in the paint are similar.
Only my opinion..
09 September 2003, 02:07 PM
The tire/wheel details are the best I've seen....
Try to put oil drips under the front of the car or something, that'd be awesome...
Ooh, yea, something weird about the front bumper....
04 April 2004, 03:27 AM
great work, reminds me of the models off the game called S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
04 April 2004, 12:04 PM
very very good. just needs abit of bird shit on the window screen
07 July 2004, 03:35 PM
how i wish i had ur skill to model tat car !!
08 August 2004, 02:24 AM
This is absolutely looks real photographç. Excellent textures and render :bounce:
08 August 2004, 02:43 AM
Have to come out of hiding on this post. We dont see enough 'junkers' on here!
I love it!
08 August 2004, 10:29 AM
08 August 2004, 02:14 AM
it is so real
02 February 2005, 11:16 AM
This is what I call reality .. perfect
06 June 2005, 06:18 PM
WOOT! Its always nice to see a "clunker" instead of flashy new stuff.:D
