(http://assets.cgsociety.org/nvart/417731_1275152215/1024bound)The starting point for my inspiration was Syd Mead's "Sulaco" space warship, from the movie "Aliens". I imagined how even more technological advancements would make a nuclear powered space battleship possible.
With the development of artificial gravity and gravity blocking technology the human race will be able to conquer the farthest corners of our solar system some day, whether we develop faster-than-light propulsion or not. Unfortunately, a military presence in space is likely to become a necessity, with outlaw organizations and rogue states posing a threat to our civilization.
Anti-gravity generators would make possible the construction of large spacecraft on the ground, eliminating the need to assemble spaceships in orbit. Advancements in radiation shielding technology might make it possible to have the nuclear reactors right next to the inhabited sections of the ship, without any harm to the crew. Military as well as civilian spaceships would be able to take off and land on the surface of a planet regardless of size, although their atmospheric flight speed would always be limited by their aerodynamics.
Armed with missiles, particle beam weapons, and kinetic heavy cannons such vessels would be able to keep the peace in the new frontier.
Everything, including the background, was modeled and rendered in Lightwave 3D, including the Earth. Photoshop for textures of course.
