View Full Version : The Show's Sketchbook

Hi Everyone,

I'm a Studio Director for Graphite Lab ( and spend most of my day developing games for 360, Wii and PS3. When I'm not crunching out games I like to work on landscapes and game inspired doodles...

I've been working in mostly marker and ink lately. Though I have been doing some color in Photoshop for a few recent pieces.

Hope you like what you see! Feedback is always welcome!

Thanks to Gary Bedell ( for pushing me to get this stuff online!

This is a location for the children's book I'm working on. The main characters will have to pass through this location on their way to a far away village.

It was done with prismacolor marker and microns - with a little post work in photoshop. Total time on this one was about 4 hours.

Inspired by the same soft coloring style seen in Konami's elebits; I wanted to study that implementation by finding a quick coloring style that could be applied to a group of images.

Here's one attempt that I was drawn to...

The swamp location from the short story - inspired by some of scottie young's work on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Total work on this was about 8 hours with prismacolors, microns and some considerable touch-ups in photoshop afterward to adjust values.

A quick dose of color applied to the swamp image.

Daily Sketch entry... I think the topic was Bad Guy...

Starting a SMB throwback composition. Inspired by some of the graphic fountain images that have been showing up.. and cheeks shading style...

Revised line work, started confirming some of the lines... added some more framing elements in the sky via the clouds and vine/flag. Started to refine bowser's shape too.

Finished the pencils and started the inking working from the top down.

Continued Inking.

Continued work on the SMB piece. I'm getting into the coloring phase now and have some progress to share.

Complete pass on the colors of the SMB piece. I have some e clean up to do for sure...

I've gotten totally into Chris Sanders' work recently and had to post this homage to one of his girls. Spent maybe 2 hours start to finish - hope it makes your Monday happy.

07 July 2010, 02:15 PM
Another spread with some homage to Sanders... and also some homage to the Zhu.

Sorry for the nudity.. it couldn't be helped.

07 July 2010, 02:19 PM
Continuing study of Sanders... I've never drawn a mermaid before. I recommend it.

07 July 2010, 03:28 PM
Another work inspired by Chris Sanders. These are greater departures into a slightly different style than the past studies, and the next one I've got ready to color is the first attempt without any real reference.

Stay tuned.

Thanks Daw! I remember seeing your stuff in the Daily Sketch quite a bit - I haven't been there in a while though. Will have to get back into it soon.

Another round of sketches - this time in colored pencil, then 'inked' with regular graphite. I like the look and think I'll be keeping this style for a while with upcoming sketches.

08 August 2010, 06:26 PM
Dude, i'm loving the new pencil work. Keep it up man. I'm glad to see you're updating your thread :)

08 August 2010, 03:09 PM
Thanks G!

Got some more for ya...

So this one was a pretty quick doodle.. and I was really happy with how it looked on paper, but the scan and presentation don't really get the same pop... ah well... hope you enjoy!

Really diggin' this colored pencil mood that I'm in. Here's the sketches from this week.

08 August 2010, 06:10 PM
Last night I saw a message from Chris Sanders ( mentioning a contest to illustrate a nightmare...

Sketchaholic (

I busted out the pencils and ink last night, but had to hit the colors before work this morning... was a fun little sprint.

I'll post some of the thumbnails from the alternative ideas I had a little later...

Took a week off from some sketching, but have some new stuff to share from this week. Taking some reference from miss mosh ( to get some good poses to play with while continuing with the colored pencil fun.

Another edition of the weekly sketch - this time with a bit of a retro feel inspired a bit by the Jetsons classic cartoon - well the cars are anyway.

I hadn't sketched in a while so I gave myself 30 minutes this past weekend to MAKE something go on the page. Might add some more defining characteristics later, but I thought I would share my 30 minute sprint.

Happy Monday,

This was a 45 minute freestyle piece done all with a single black prismacolor marker. I started thinking I was just going to do a simple character piece.. and then all hell broke loose. Not sure how it happened, but the result was fun.

What was interesting is that you can notice other shapes and characters in the scene if you rotate the image 180 degrees. Some of these were intentional, like the bridges in the top left corner, but some were not - like the suess style face that appears.

Anyway... hope you enjoy my Mind Graffiti...

Playing around with some different approaches to generating the line art and got carried away with some colors and textures.

Took maybe an hour from sketch to finished.
