there is a feature in Combustion which works with RPF image sequences, where you can replace a bitmap in the sequence.

Basically it contains UV data, so you could have a texture mapped onto a curved surface, rendered out to a RPF sequence, but be able to change that inside combustion.

Is there something similar in AE? I can see Re:Vision do something called Re:Map

but are there any built-in/free alternatives?

You could try a Displacement filter based on color(red/green).
