View Full Version : lens blur DOF, sharp edges, depth Map

Is there a clever way to eliminate sharp edges when creating depth of field, using a z-depth map?

It makes sense that it would occur, as the depth map is an image mask without any blur, so blurred areas are often defined by sharp transitions in value. But is there a good fix?

or.. am I doing something wrong?

Well if you use a mask that is middle gray it's logical the effect will only be applied 50% in that spot.
It's a problem you can't automagically fix if you use masks, perhaps if you use more advanced tools, but if you separate overlapping surfaces into different layers it can improve the effect.
