are supporting edges necessary when modelling hard surfaces for games? or are soft/hard edges all that is needed? trying to determine the differences in game and cinematic modeling.

Support Edges are used only for SubD Modelling...when you model a Highpoly to bake a Normal Map you might use them, but not in the final ingame model...
