(http://assets.cgsociety.org/nvart/376601_1272663795/1024bound)This is what is known as a Rotavolo. In particular a TS.2850 model, The most powerful and advanced land racing vehicle ever built. Known throughout fans and racing syndicates as Hyper Dragons, they're a single wheel vehicle driven up front similar to motorcycles. At their prime, Hyper Dragon races were the most watched events in human history, a true united global event. But as death tolls rose, many national governments made the races illegal, deeming them far too dangerous. In time, the races were made illegal in almost all countries, causing a very swift and unforeseen global economic meltdown. With such instability, Many out of work drivers turned to a more lucrative career in crime and piracy, modifying their Hyper Dragons and forming clans. Able to reach speeds over 300mph and transporting them long distances very efficiently, these clans were very successful at creating an extremely fast and powerful force.

This illustration was painted in Photoshop. Here are a few close-ups...

I am definitely going to do another piece for this contest. Thanks for checking it out!

that is just an awesome illustration all round everything from the crisp design and rendering to the specific uniform design of the characters. Very well thought out, and quite a strong syd reference. Very original concept

05-01-2010, 01:06 AM
Amazing!! the characters and the scratched paint effect is what I like most.
Good luck

05-01-2010, 04:29 AM
Wow! thats about all I can say.

05-01-2010, 04:37 AM
Great design, i love this "simple" form. It drives imagination how this could travel.

05-01-2010, 05:05 AM
Thanks guys I'm glad you enjoy it, much appreciated! I was really trying to capture a cinematic feel with this.

05-01-2010, 07:04 AM
Probably the most "Syd Mead style" work here so far. Good luck!

05-01-2010, 09:09 AM
with respect to all the others, best yet in my opinion .. well done

05-01-2010, 10:03 AM
WOW! Amazing..

05-01-2010, 11:49 AM
This is just fantastic! I have to say I watched the image for a long time and imagine the moment they set it up for race, some people watch this... I'm impressed :)

Great artwork... I'm courios about the next one :)

05-01-2010, 12:06 PM
i love the over all render of this one and also the concept.. 5 stars!!! ;)

05-01-2010, 02:40 PM
Really thanks again! I'm glad there is a noticeable "Sydness" to it. Your perception can change while working on a piece for a while, especially when the goal is to try and create something that is purposely influenced by another artist. Sometimes it feels a lot like their style, sometimes too much of your own. They way I approached this was trying to create an illustration that not so much made people say "That looks like a Syd Mead", but for Syd to say "I would do that". But I am still very happy people say it resembles Syd's work, lol!

My new design is going to come from the same "world" as this one. It will be more of a 3/4 view to get some depth. I'll post a very rough sketch of the basic design soon.

Here is a rough sketch for my new submission...

05-04-2010, 12:32 PM
Easily my favourite finished entry so far, nice job!

05-04-2010, 05:01 PM
Hi, may I ask about the software did you use to render this?
thank you

05-04-2010, 08:32 PM
Also my favorite entry thus far. Very cool and unique concept.

05-04-2010, 09:41 PM
wow, this my favorite, absolutely

05-05-2010, 04:08 AM
Another inspiring rendering! I love that people are doing it old school too, not just sticking to 3D.

05-05-2010, 10:18 AM
Very original, really nice clean piece with a strong Syd Mead look. Love it. Good luck!

05-06-2010, 01:53 PM
I agree with the others, very nice!

05-07-2010, 10:35 PM
This piece was all painted in photoshop.

And thanks to everyone, this competition is really getting exciting!

05-08-2010, 02:51 PM
yeah it does:)
congrats again for this amazing piece of art.
just wondering about the people, did u use any sort of template?

05-10-2010, 07:28 PM
Well the way I approach doing people is to work very large and then scale down. It lets you achieve fine details. But no I don't really use a template or anything. I just gather reference photos to work from for lighting or clothes details, mostly to enhance the realism. once I figure that out then I can just create all the characters I need.

05-12-2010, 11:08 AM
Whoa...! Now this image specially has been able to capture a certain "essence" of Syd Mead which no other image has been able to create... I will stand for that. Once I saw this, I imagined what could have been like to stand beside this machine... a racing machine... This is definitely one of my favorites. keep it up.

05-12-2010, 07:37 PM
absolutely the most 'sydish' of all the entries so far. Top of my list to win ..good luck.
a breakdown of how you done it would be awesome :D

05-12-2010, 09:37 PM
Amazing work .

05-15-2010, 03:15 PM
Hey Guys thanks.

@alan9000 well I had my sketch. I started with the background first, then determined composition. Did the vehicle in 3 parts, wheel, cockpit and tail. then the characters and tweaked the lighting and color till it felt right. Like my other work it's painted in photoshop.

06-01-2010, 01:10 PM
Yeap!This is it!
Look like a scene from a StarWars episode.Love it!
Great work.

06-02-2010, 03:06 PM
Hey guys thanks!

I have never seen Chris foss's work until you mentioned it, There's similarities for sure (The color and stripes.) If I didn't know better I would think some of his illustrations were done by Syd!
@LefTerris. It looks like a scene from a Star Wars episode... awesome compliment. It seems that my subconscious pulled from may sources for sci-fi inspiration!

06-03-2010, 03:52 PM
My favorite! I have it like wallpaper on my desktop :)

06-05-2010, 10:48 AM
Thanks buubu! Interesting you say you made as your wallpaper because that's what the winning pieces are used as on the Nvidia website! If you check my CG portfolio you can grab a larger version.

chilombiano, robotlove86, frameboX

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the feedback.:)

06-11-2010, 09:10 PM
fantastic work! Ive been a huge fan of Syd Mead my whole life..I agree with others here this COULD be a Mead painting. Iconic, strange but understandable enough for us to identify and understand what it does. Only suggestion i would have is to angle it in frame, or frame it better feels too much like a silhouette/orthographic shot to me.

again fantastic...my new desktop image.

06-15-2010, 02:30 PM

I'm glad you see a Syd resemblance! Thanks for the comments, If I do another piece with this vehicle I will for sure have it angled. I have it this way to make an impact with the size of the tail wing. and to have a bold circle catch your eye.
Thanks again!

06-15-2010, 05:51 PM
Agreed striking image. I think this is one of those cases that could sing praises for 3d tho. Traditional rendering, especially done like this is beautiful...but with a 3d rendering you have the ability afterwards to tweak for camera and play with composition....

Best of luck in the competition!

06-18-2010, 04:15 PM
Superb work! very clean and elegant and the vehicle itself has that enigmatic quality of looking like the product of very advanced technology.

Good luck!

06-21-2010, 12:29 PM
this is very nice, specially love the colors and proportions.

06-22-2010, 04:29 PM
