Alright, going to throw my hat into the mix. I've been looking for an excuse to practice some different rendering techniques and I love the visual treatment of TRON. We'll see how much I can manage to get done!

Visual Treatment - Classic Tron
Type of Entry - Rez FX followed by a DeRez FX if I have time

A man enters the TRON world. Looks around for a moment, takes a step and is instantly derezed by some un-noticed trap / attack. I'm hoping to give it a classic tron look & feel and hopefully just get a quick cheap laugh out of the short animation.

Off to find TRON and get some good references!!

Well I just finished watching TRON for the first time (I know, I know, us young folk don't know what we're missing) - I was really inspired by it! It had a really great refreshing style to it and I am definitely pumped to start working on this now. Just need to finish off a client project this week and I'll get right on it!

Posted the Lightcycle model here:

So, I decided today that I'm going to not only pay tribute to the original TRON movie, but also to it's most ultimate fan - TRON guy. He's going to be the character who gets to go into TRON, though unfortunately his stay will not be that long. I'm going to stylize suit a little bit more and I think I'm going to neglect certain.... revealing... features of his costume.

hahahahah........ man. That is way cool dude. I'm laughing my butt off already.

Good luck mate.

Thanks, hopefully it turns out as silly as I'm hoping.

Just a quick update today, didn't have too much time to get into it. Got a rough likeness of his head done, not going to go into too much detail since there won't be any closeups. So long as the rough shape looks right it should be okay.

Haven't had as much time as I'd like, so just did a quick rough form of his body and tweaked his head a little more. I'm hoping to get TRON-Guy completed by next weekend, then I'll start figuring out exactly what I want to do with the remaining time.

In the process of retopo, texture and rigging - figured I'd throw a quick update.

Alright, so I got the textures and shaders I'm going to use as the base for my renders. On to rigging next! Keep in mind I'm going to try and match the old movie quality and wanted to keep his amateur quality lines on the suit.

It's the Tron Dude! I wonder if he ever thought he'd be the subject of a digital sculpture?

Anyways the sculpt looks great! How are you going to animate it?

05-24-2010, 03:57 PM
That model is awesome! It looks just like the Tron dude :)

05-25-2010, 05:37 AM
Thanks! I'm happy it's actually looking somewhat like him. Hopefully he doesn't mind me poking a bit of fun with this one :P

Alright, so I've got a bigger update this time. He's finally all rigged and ready to be animated. Since I have the appropriate time, I'm going to go ahead with my plan to do a REZ followed by a DEREZ. I'm going to try and stay true to the original, though we'll see how well I can accomplish that considering I haven't done any FX work before.

See below for an look at a small animatic & FX test (based on Video Copilot AE tutorials), storyboard and a look at my rig for TRON GUY.

Alright, I'm really behind on this, but still going to push hard to hit the deadline. Here's a blayblast of my first pass through the animation, will try to clean up a few issues if I have time. On to building the set and then starting the effects / rendering. Hooray for last-minute projects! :P

06-11-2010, 01:05 PM
Good stuff! I don't know if you'll have time for this, but in the walking parts of the animation, maybe you could adjust the foot movement so it's more heel to toe? That's the only thing that seemed a little off.

06-11-2010, 04:37 PM
Yeah, I'm really not satisfied with the walk, everything else is "ok". Will definitely try to re-visit that once I get some of the other stuff done.

06-11-2010, 07:19 PM
Dude Tron Guy rocks! :D

06-12-2010, 03:20 AM
JohnnyRandom: Hopefully he'll get to see this animation one day and get a bit of a laugh out of it.

Alright I added a bit more foot-roll and then tried to smooth out the walk a little bit. I'm realizing I really need some practice animating like this, I've mostly just done run-cycles and animation for games, so jumping into a more "acting" kind of shot has shown my weaknesses. However, I'm satisfied enough with it for the moment and since the deadline is getting closer, I must move on. Here is TRON Guy rendered out on a still backdrop from the movie.

06-14-2010, 05:39 AM
Okay, got my first pass of the Rez completed. There are some details in the original movie that I just couldn't figure out how to reproduce. Specifically the beams of light moving up appears to have been produced by recording a light being refracted in the original, no idea how to do that so I went with a cheap alternative. Other than that, I'm getting excited to move on to the DeRez tomorrow and finish this one up!

Ha! Really funny man, flushing out the env and vfx really adds to it.

Good luck on the de-rez!

06-15-2010, 05:11 AM
Yeah, I was even surprised how much the background and FX added to the animation. With that said, I am now FINISHED! It includes a simple DeREZ and I spliced in some of the audio from the movie which adds a nice touch to the presentation - it's true that audio is half the experience.
