View Full Version : maya rigid solver alternatives/advice?

I have been struggling with maya rigid sims for a little while now and seem to be hitting a wall, either I'm missing something or the maya solver is just about useless. It seems to work ok with only a few rigids active in the scene (6-10ish) but anything with any complexity to it either won't sim at all, crashes my machine (which should be more than up to the task, 12 core amd with 18g ram and 3800quadro) or it does finally sim after a loooooooong amount of waiting only to find that the sim is full off odd jumps and random shards stuck in other shards spinning and jumping around for no apparent reason. it seems that EVERY collision causes interpenetration errors. I have heard of people that have done sims using shard counts in the thousands using mayas solver but I am yet to actually see it.
Basically what I would like to know is what is the best way to achieve decent results with complex sims, is there any tutorials that could help? if not maya what solver/plugin/script would you recomend.

In maya 2011 bullet physics don't work.
why build autodesk not bullet physics into maya? :banghead: other programms like cinema 4d has it.

yeah I have got the dynamica plugin and have been messin around with it some. It is alot better than the maya solver, I just need to learn how to actually use it I think. one thing I did notice with bullet was that once the objects should be at rest after the colisions there seems to be a radial field that continues to slide them away from the origin, probably just a setting that i'm missing though.

Yeah current maya rigid solver = fail. Learning to use the Dynamica plugin takes a couple of hours and you get really decent results.

I reccomend you the pulldownit plugin, there is a free version.

i really love the novodex plugs for rigid bodies !
but it works well only on 2008 if you use maya 2009 i have a problem with baking the sims.
and for maya rigid bodies engine , it is just a huge joke i'm wondering if it has been updated since Maya 3 ? i guess no ...
the nparticles with particles collision is by default the best stuff i think for faking rigid bodies collision ...
