This is a great start, the "Meadness" is sticking out all ready. The alien camel things are a nice touch, cant wait to see how this one turns out.

04-12-2010, 02:04 PM
TMunro - Thanks! Although I'm not a vehicle designer like some of the entrants will be (I've never drawn a vehicle in my life!) I'm hoping I can inject sufficient Meadness to compensate :)

Anyhow, here's my colour rough

04-12-2010, 03:53 PM
Its looking great ! ill be updating my WIP every day, ive never completed a contest before, lets see if updating daily helps.

you really captured his style good work

04-12-2010, 05:37 PM
Hey Simon,

Cool concept, like a lot the design for the vehicle :) The background is really great, match perfect with the style of the transport. Good luck. Cheers!! :D

04-12-2010, 05:50 PM
Lolec - Looking forward to seeing your WIPs. Plenty of time for this contest so no rush. Cheers!

Ferx - Thanks, mate, happy you think it's looking OK so far :)

04-12-2010, 07:37 PM
Wasn't really going to post WIPs but what the heck, might as well...

04-13-2010, 04:03 PM
love the concept of the vehicle.. :) good luck...

04-13-2010, 04:05 PM
Looks fantastic so far..Colors looks very much like Syd's paintings. Very nice.

04-13-2010, 04:29 PM
cgdigi - Thanks, good luck also!

serio - Glad you think so, the colours are the second biggest challenge, after the geometry of the thing - sometimes I wish I had a 3D app :)

04-13-2010, 04:54 PM
You definitely have some "classic" Mead elements.

Exotic location
Parked funky vehicle
People standing and sitting around
strange animals
You might punch your color palette and contrast, in the foreground.

04-13-2010, 06:21 PM
lunadude - Hey thanks, if I'm hitting all those then there's hope! And for sure, those colours will be buzzing soon, what's mostly down now is the underpainting which is lower contrast than the final colour. In theory :)

OK, an update. A bit of spot the difference really, hard to credit I spend 4 hours on those tailpipes and the rough detail on four of the wheels. I bet Syd could have done two full images in that time :)

04-13-2010, 07:41 PM
just great man i love it.. im thinking about do another one.. one person can post diferent entries right? .. yours is great!

04-13-2010, 07:51 PM
The hatch is looking much better in the update.

04-13-2010, 08:49 PM
It's looking great! I have a similar color scheme in my piece, more of a red-orange, chrome with cream accents. Your portfolio illustrations are very well done and I'm excited to see how you use your skill on the mechanical side! Also I sent you a network request, check your portfolio if you want to join.

04-13-2010, 09:20 PM
This is looking really awesome. :buttrock: For the wheels Id say add some dust/sand to them, they look a bit clean still.

04-13-2010, 11:53 PM
geez thats a solid design, simon. great to see you tackle this type of subject.

Very well done..Gota get my A into G and start something now!!.

Very inspiring effort, simon

04-14-2010, 12:10 PM
Genesisa - Thanks. Yep, you can do as many as you want I think

lunadude - Cheers, things are coming clearer slowly :)

amscime - Thanks, appreciated. Got to admit I'm finding it quite difficult to do mechanical subjects but it's a good way of learning. BTW, accepted your request

Pan3sar - Absolutely, they're just rough detailed at the moment. When I've got that sorted I'll play about with a few scratches & chips & stuff. Thanks!

LightSovereign - Hey Marley, glad you like it. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Whatever it is I bet it will really fit the theme of "futuristic", as does much of your stuff!

04-14-2010, 01:07 PM
That's a very cool picture, can't wait to see it finished :)

Good luck

04-14-2010, 02:54 PM
Yeah I get what your saying. This is also my first time creating an illustration around a vehicle. I've dome lots of sketches and things like that but never fully rendered.

04-14-2010, 03:17 PM
NicholasCaruana - Thanks! A few days yet though :)

amscime - That's why I like competitions, they push you out of your comfort zone more than portfolio pieces and more than even commissioned work.

04-15-2010, 03:51 PM
Getting there, bit by bit. Working on the shadows and reflections. I suspect some of them are a bit off but never mind.

04-15-2010, 04:00 PM
Close-up at about 80%

04-15-2010, 07:38 PM
Looking Uber smooth, Simon. seeing the close up of the work placed into the wheels is incredible. your work on the chrome aspects is standing out aswell. I'm having trouble implementing chrome into my design i just can't get it to go shiny  hahaha.

Sound progress, Simon

04-15-2010, 07:50 PM
Hey Marley, keep at it! You'll get there! The chrome is relatively easy, don't think of it as a reflection, just paint the landscape in there and distort it according to the shape of the metal. That's what I did anyway. I'm sure the 3D guys will spot some flaw in my reflections (and certainly the symmetry of my freehand wheels!) but that's kind of the fun of painting, introducing your own style into the mix.

04-15-2010, 08:11 PM
This is looking sick man, about the chrome, the bumper bit is wrong, because its shape curves away so you would see reflections of the ground. However that looks a lot nicer than some ground. details are crazy

04-16-2010, 10:43 AM
hurry up man! :P i want to see :banghead: =p
i think im going to cry dude.. your details are great! cant way to see the end of this work!

04-16-2010, 06:34 PM
Pan3sar - Cheers! Hopefully the reflections will come better when I add the final detail, they're a bit fuzzy right now.

Genesisa - This is me hurrying, believe it or not. Should get faster when I get onto the landscape and sky - back to familiar territory :)

Not much to show for the last few hours but here it is anyway. Got the rough detail sorted on the characters and adding some rocks and stuff.

04-16-2010, 06:38 PM
This is absolutly astonishing, I like how you are incorporating Syd mead style elements in the painting Which works as a plus! Like the reflective materials, and interaction with people, and exotic world, and some exotic animals!

04-16-2010, 07:31 PM
This is shaping up beautifully.
It's great watching the development here.

Keep on truckin! :D

04-16-2010, 07:46 PM
Hey Bill, glad you're liking it so far. It's a tough challenge but fun at the same time. Are you going to be entering? You should :)

04-16-2010, 09:25 PM
Wow I wish I had 2d skills like you do. That is really great work. Two Thumbs up!

Iím thinking about entering, if I can find the time. I like the theme. June 30th is a good end date from today.
--Gotta start incubating some ideas now, whether I can jump in or not. :lightbulb

04-17-2010, 01:20 PM
RyanWalsh - Thanks! Yep, loads of stuff to include, I just hope I can do it justice!

QuantumPixel - Thanks v much

Quadart - Yeah, give it a go :)

04-17-2010, 07:11 PM
Done a bit more this evening, trying to get all the colours working together. Given my horse things snouts, too.

04-18-2010, 05:40 PM
Added some more detail on the right of the pic. Next I'll do the trees on the left, then go over the whole piece again for the fine detail. I'll also move the distant part of the train down a little bit so it doesn't form a tangent with the far tyre.

04-18-2010, 08:26 PM
ur project is amazing, i see ur talent in details, really i love the shiny&attractive color palette....

04-19-2010, 10:15 AM
ExpertBeater - Thanks v much :)

04-19-2010, 03:40 PM
Last WIP before the final. Next step is to go over the whole image and add the fine detail, then I'll post the final through the interface thingy

Nice work man. Love the colors and idea. :)

04-19-2010, 04:40 PM
Really looking good Simon! Can't wait to see this piece finished. I'm pretty close to completing mine. Had an idea change so it set me back a bit, that and work. If I am able to, I think I'm going to do another piece for the contest. but for now just focusing on one.

04-19-2010, 05:43 PM
Marat-Ars - Thanks, glad you're liking it!

amscime - Cool, I'll look forward to seeing it. I may do another as well, I'll see what I think of this when it's done. My first idea was "Party Pods", floating platforms like mobile entertainment venues, so I might go for that later.
