View Full Version : Need help with cannon firing explosion

Hi Guys,

I just did a little personal anim at home and want to pretty it up with an explosion at the end. Here is the anim:

I would appreciate some pointers on how to approach this. I want a fast burning gunpowder smoke like effect. Should I try out fluid effects or nparticles? Thanks so much in advance!

You could use either and get decent results depending on what you are comfortable with, personally Id run with fluids. Maya 2011 has Auto resize fluid container which is gunna speed up your tests by a million. To get you started the general idea is to release density and temperature and key if off after a couple of frames. If you just want a 'flash' then make sure you have a lot of dissipation on temperature. Use a volume axis field with a high directional magnitude to push the fluid out of the canon and make sure you have plenty of swirl on.

Thanks Jeremy. Going to do a couple tests today with fluids and I will come back with playblasts and more questions :)

whoops, had 2 cgtalk tabs open... posted in the wrong one. HAHA.

Great animation though. I too would go down the fluids route.

Ended up with this:

Definitely was a good learning experience, I have never touched dynamics before but now I have a newfound love for them :)

Gonna need to bug you guys about making a torch flame for my next anim :)
