05 May 2002, 03:04 AM

miracle grow

05 May 2002, 05:01 AM
wow, Nice start! I like your character! :bounce: Good luck!

05 May 2002, 05:42 AM
heres some early lighting tests, theres still ALOT of things missing . this is 3 1/2 hours of work so far. i'll continue tommorow.. The hands and small details will make a big difference, the lighting is still off but im figuring out how to make it work....

thanks folo

05 May 2002, 08:04 AM
I like it! It's got a real creepy kinda' storybook feel to it.

You might want to make the path a bit more narrow in the distance though.

05 May 2002, 08:11 AM
Good start, the only thing I'd suggest would be to not just cut and paste a single tree for the forest, but have different ones; define the character on tghe road a little more, as it's not clear at the moment if it's a male/female child/adult; and finally, alter your brushes a bit so as to avoid that photoshop airbrush look.

keep us posted!

05 May 2002, 12:12 PM
youre right i am going to change the trees i just put them in real quick to see how the composition would work. i have never used any other PS brush i will experiment and see, the character below is not even 1% completed, the whole thing is FAR FROM DONE. thanks :)

05 May 2002, 03:04 PM
Hey I like it!

05 May 2002, 04:01 PM
yah cool ,good character

05 May 2002, 05:17 PM
a little further along still needs work below on the ground, especially the grass, and then for last the poor victim, should it be a boy or girl? not sure yet... maybe a girl going to add more trolls to the tree too make it look like a whole community. I also notice that the trees need to be darkend towards the back they are all the same color preety much thats no good, i'll fix that tonight.:)

05 May 2002, 05:24 PM
Make it a boy with his dog.

Is it just me or do you feel a little neglected here on the 2D challenges. I feel like the red headed step child that no one talks to at family get toethers.

05 May 2002, 05:26 PM
totally we are so not, but thats ok because from what ive seen the best 3D artist are the ones that can pick up a pencil and let it rip...

05 May 2002, 05:31 PM
Amen Bro!

05 May 2002, 06:52 PM
egad, I'm dyin' trying to keep up with all the threads on this one, let alone the 2D..:argh:

Just wanted to add a "looks cool" anyway tho, because it does.

I think one of the reasons there isn't more crossover is at least for me, all I can do is sit back and admire, like you said, there are far less people who can bust out righteous 2D and 3D..though all of them seem to be in this forum..:p

Oh and I guess if it matters, I vote for the boy too..just leave the poor dog alone :D

05 May 2002, 07:13 PM
coooool :surprised

05 May 2002, 07:31 PM
not much of an update but added some simple atmosphere to the trees.. i hate trees. they are a pain in the butt.. am i putting too many posts? this is starting to look like a tutorial..hehe

thanks for the comments i think the poor victim is going to have to be a boy majority rules

05 May 2002, 07:59 PM
He man! Just found this thread. Must've been browsing this site with my eyes closed. Looks great! Specially love the light of the candle shining at the guy in the middle.

I'm just wondering about something in you composition...
For balance, it really needs something on the road further away. See what you do with it.

I'll keep following this one.

05 May 2002, 08:03 PM
like what ? i was thinking of extending the height to show the sky better with the moon etc. im not really sure...any ideas would be appreciated

No, don't put more sky in it. The problem is that when you color the boy, all interesting parts are focussed in the left bottom.
thats why it needs s.thing in the opposit corner. like his mother shouting don't go in the forrest after 12. Or a gate to the park, or a castle. or a dog-wagon and the dog is runing fromthe boy. Or more gnomes.

jeroentje
sorry 4 the typos, thats the scotch talking

05 May 2002, 08:28 PM
haha wow you got into that one! hahaha i like the dog running away idea..if i put the mother in it might take away from the whole solitude in the middle of nowhere i feel. more gnomes would be cool......hmmmmmm you got me thinking....

05 May 2002, 05:49 AM
added one more goblin.. hes hard to see left hand side. kinda cute little monkey guy....I gotta tell you compared to the past 2D challenges this ones looks very seriously juicy......lots of good stuff

05 May 2002, 10:37 AM
Looking very good!!!
I can't really crit about it yet but it looks like it is coming along nicely!!!

05 May 2002, 03:24 PM
Those goblins are great!

05 May 2002, 07:34 PM
hey koryh your portfolio is just amazing.... blew me away...i have to stop making web sites and do more illustrations..

05 May 2002, 02:54 AM
This is moving along great. I commend you for the really interesting viewpoint:) it's never easy for me to break out of the norm. Cool lighting.

As far a critique, none really.... but, I can only mention the type of problem areas I would struggle with if I was doing this piece. That would out for the proportions of the kid, it's tough sometimes not to make them look like tiny adults. when you add in the radical perspective it makes even more difficult.

05 May 2002, 09:33 AM
hey sleepless, i know what you mean about that being the hard part, believe me its no coincidence that thats what im leaving for last...perspective is hard and the perspective i chose i think is even harder...thanks for the comments:beer:

05 May 2002, 10:13 AM

Very nice picture you have there. Original and interesting. I have one comment on the composition. If you look at the attached picture you can see i've pointet out an imaginary line that draws too much attention. Suggest that you bend the arm of the candelcarrying goblin a bit. I think if you did something there, just a small adjustment, you will have a great picture.

Regards Knut

hey I like your troll guys. Now I want to see a WIP in the 3d modelling section!

05 May 2002, 06:55 PM

05 May 2002, 08:26 AM

i added a little shout out on the kids tshirt to the folks at CG channel for such a great site. you'll probably need to view it on the higher rez version..:wavey:

05 May 2002, 09:38 AM
even though im not done if you wanna see how this illustration is being made so far click to view this short 400kb quicktime movie showing the process. its so-so quality...but hey 400k is smaller than most free porn vids

05 May 2002, 04:25 PM
Cool. why didn't I think of that!
It's so neat to see how people work and the process.
thanks for sharing

05 May 2002, 04:29 PM

jeroentje :)
(I'll go nuts if I have to draw another leaf...)

05 May 2002, 06:32 PM
Elfufu, what a fantastic piece you've got here. Man I'm pissed that I've been missing all of the great work here. It seems to me that as far as artistic work and the quality of the pictures themselves this 2D stuff here is on a higher level than most of the 3D stuff. I really love your piece. It tells such a story without a word.

I guess I'm going to really kick a$$ on my 3D piece to get up to your artistic quality.

06 June 2002, 04:37 AM
ALMOST done i might add some things but i doubt it if anything i'll do another drawing all together

06 June 2002, 09:17 AM
Done? But you have 4 more weeks! At least add some more definition to the main troll guy in the middle so he's more of a focal point.

06 June 2002, 05:04 PM
yeah youre right i'll work on it more. :)

06 June 2002, 03:39 AM
Yes:bounce: If it's done great, if not...great! Plenty of time to show us more. I think you handled a tough composition really well. I too am wondering when to stop.

All I have to say is... fantastic:applause:

I love ya style,... it reminds me of some artist, but donīt no who
in the moment.
And i compare whit Kirt: A little bit more focus on the dominating
Troll.... and where is the doggy???hehe!

Tommy Lee:beer:

06 June 2002, 04:04 PM
what do you guys mean with more focus on the center troll? i havent any clue what else to do. (maybe make him nude? nudity seems to attract you artisitic pervs :p ) no but really and ideas would be appreciated. as far as the Dog is concerned i might draw one of the two dogs i have at home.

thers jedi the gay boston terrier

Jabba the Mutt, the fat snoring english bulldog... im undecided

06 June 2002, 06:23 PM
I was just commenting that he seems a bit unfinished or unrefined. Especially the left arm and hand. I'd tighten that up a bit and add a little more detail so he 'pops' from the page a bit. See the detail on the forground troll (the green one) for example. You really have good definition on his horns, eyes, and teeth. It just looks more finished this way.

Since the central troll is what I see first when looking at your image, I just think he should be as well defined and shouldn't blend with the rest of the elements as much.

06 June 2002, 03:45 PM
Jeez, i gotta take more time to look over everyones stuff. Nice Style. I like where it's going, or gone. Yup the 2D stuff is very inspiring creatively, the 3D stuff is inspiring technically. The feeling you've got going here is great.
