View Full Version : Enchanted Forrest 2D - environment + character - jeroentje

Here's my first (still very) WIP for the challenge. I still need to do a whole lot of work on this one.
I think the waterfall in the back looks a bit too icy. I'm also thinking about putting something like "the city of Petra" behind it (you know, like in Indiana Jones 3) to give it a more "classical" fairytale-style. The front still needs a lot of detailing. And I want to put something really scairy on the tree crossing the stream.
Hope you like it,

Hey Looking Good!
try to make your colors a little more varied. shift the color in the shadows and in the light. don't just add black or white. That is a painting no no :p
I love the Petra idea. That place is cool.
05 May 2002, 06:18 PM
Yes you're right about that. I just got bored with the stones and trees, and started working on a character (no, not the scairy one).
She'll be sitting on the piece of wood in the front of the picture.

/gasping for breath
How do you manage to draw all these beautiful females?
05 May 2002, 06:47 PM
Being obsessed helps a lot.
05 May 2002, 06:48 PM
jumpin' catfish..I need to send my tablet back for one from the batch you got..all I can seem to make are weird texture maps with mine..
if she's going to be scared of the thing on the log, maybe she'd be, uh, turning towards the viewer to run? :D
anyway, cool so far :)
05 May 2002, 07:22 PM
do you freehand these girls?, are they based from pictures? or are you rotoscoping them? she looks great have her tilt forward a bit so we can see her......uh nevermind
skintones are awesome, great work!!!
05 May 2002, 07:29 PM
Sheesh ... don't you people work for a living?!?!
How is it that everyone is so far ahead of me already on this? Maybe I just work slowly ... :hmm:
Anyway, beautiful work on the girl! I like the dragonfly wings but I'm not sure where she'd find stockings and gloves in the forest? Maybe it'd look just as good with cameoflaged skin in these areas? You know, like chetah spots or tiger stripes ... just a thought.
Keep going, it looks great!
05 May 2002, 07:41 PM
speaking of work ive been slacking off all day at work to get this darn drawing done...
05 May 2002, 08:04 PM
Very nice. I really like where the wings attach to the body. Maybe you could do more with this? Or have them more intertwined with the skin, rather than just sitting on top. Speaking of wings, those don't really look like they would be able to get her off the ground. Just some stuff to think about. But beautiful work.

:bounce: YES!!!!! My first 5-stars!!!!! :bounce:
06 June 2002, 10:08 PM
Oh man, I was so bored with all the trees and rocks that I couldn't get myself back to it... and I started doing this lady for fun. Then I got the idea for this:
"Giant-lady in an 'attack of the clone-trees'-forrest".
I will see if I ever finish the first forrest.
btw what happened to the ratings?
edit - I was lazy on the sky: that's a 2 minute KPT bryce thing ;)

06 June 2002, 10:13 PM
He, she'll never find a dress in HER size :)
06 June 2002, 10:15 PM
and all was well in the world:)
06 June 2002, 10:23 PM
forest, bush, it's still enchanting..or enthralling..engorging..en-something :D
maybe the forest could be made of huge naked women, sort of land of the giants crossed with the electric ladyland cover..yeah, that's the ticket..

I'm working on that forrest as we speak (-type, whatever). Just trying to put in a lumberjack aswell. And it's 1:10 in the morning here now, and I also want to get some sleep this night.
06 June 2002, 12:00 AM

06 June 2002, 12:18 AM
Hmmm ... I dunno. Chainsaw seems like it's not the right tool for the job. Need to replace that with a bush whacker or weed eater. LOL
 Got my vote! hehehehe

06 June 2002, 05:16 PM

keep it up
06 June 2002, 09:05 PM
Okay, I decided to finish the 1st one aswell, since I got so far with it allready.
The scairy monster really ****ed. So I had to try something else instead. Here's the badguy.
Maybe he doesn't look so bad, but that's not what SHE will be thinking...
06 June 2002, 09:06 PM
...and here's my elf in the environment...
06 June 2002, 09:08 PM

THIS is my final pic. Not the pic that was here in the first place and that got linked to the poll
Sorry for messing up this thread.

This is a nice piece of work, but I wouldn't be so fast to call it finished.
A few things:
I think the whole piece needs a little more depth. At the moment it's sort of got a wierd Japanese silk painting vibe about it (perspective wise), which is kind of nice, but I'm not sure if this is what you intended.
Also, in my opinion, the characters and the environment aren't marrying as well as they might do. It looks very much like the girl especially was painted as a seperate piece and then pasted into this composition. I'd work a little on resolving some of the style differences.
As well as that, I think it could benefit from a little more reaction / interaction between the characters. Something that would tell a bit more of a story. It's pretty obvious what's going on, but I think it might be helped along by a little more indication of her reaction to him and vice versa.
That's about it. Hope this helps!!

Puddlefish you're right... again.
But I've had more than enough of this piece. I will put some more detailing in the lumberjacker and send that one in.
06 June 2002, 11:58 AM
Looks great, but i´ve the same crit like puddlefish:
A bit mor edepth would do the job.
Keep on:applause: :applause:

Did some last changes on the giant-women-forrest. Most important: they are all looking at the lumberjack now. And I tried to get the focus on the one in the middle, so the rest is a little bit blurred and I have put some birds around her head.
(btw the guy is a magical creature too. He's the offspring of my mermaid from last month's challenge. The poor guy found a job on the shore, because he couldn't stand the smell of fish :) )

Dude, the forrest with the river and fairy looks pretty cool, but I basically agree with what puddlefish had to say. If you wanted to keep the perspective I'd say tweak the colors and some of the details to accentuate the Japo-chinese feeling.
As far as your giant "bush" forrest. I guess that would be "boxwood" those trees are made of, huh? ;) Friggin hilarious!!! I was LMAO with the tip to the Monty Python lumberjack song. Too funny. hehehe.
I really love your drawing/painting style with doing your characters. It reminds me of a blend of pen+ink with oil paint and airbrushing. It gives it a really unique look. Great work on all the pics you crazy a$$ perv. ;) :p :D

Well, I allso think it starts to look too much like KOryH's concept.
Elf-girl next to water with badguy coming around the corner.
And KOryH's is about a 100 times better.

That's funny you say that, I did both in the past (back in the dark ages before Photoshop was invented). And the technique in PS reminds me a lot of it. It's just a lot more flexible this way.
06 June 2002, 03:51 PM
I agree with the others. And now I've got to go to the bathroom and.... I just got to go there.
06 June 2002, 09:22 PM
Jerontje, ya damn dastard...lol
I think ya will win the challenge, because in here are to much horny dudes:drool: ,...ahmmmm...me too, by the way.
You are the Larry Flint of this challenge:applause:
So keep ´em "cuming"
06 June 2002, 09:34 PM
He, thanks Tommy Lee.
But I think I'm disqualified for putting in a human (so maybe you where right after-all, Sangotten). I've posted my thumb and my thread for 5 days ago and it's still not in the 2D-gallery.
Oh well, if rules are that important to our moderators;
The most succesfull artists in history did NOT play by the rules.
So there's still hope for me.

Oops, it's on-line now
