So, I am about to pick up the latest Maya release and i am curious. not withstanding the fact that it is not officially supported, is there any reason i can't run Maya 2011 on UbuntuStudio? i am really fed up with redhat/centos (as someone coming from windows). I know people use Maya on Ubuntu all the time, but i am not sure if they are actually using it for production. so my question is, if i install it on ubuntu; assuming it runs at all, do you think it will be ok? or is having a production level minimilly buggy maya workstation dependent upon running redhat? If it matters, i will predominantly be rendering with MR.

Thanks,

I'd say right now, forget about Maya 2010 on Ubuntu, it's a real pain to install it completely with license etc...

Here where i work, i fought 2 days with my computer trying to make it work under Kubuntu 9.1, I mention that i work with Maya on Ubuntu since version 8.5...I just feel compeltely disappointed by lack of support concerning Debian-based distro from Autodesk...

Aside from that, i decided to switch to Fedora temporarily in order to make it work, the setup can be launched because of full rpm support and everything works fine...

The main problem with Fedora concern the lack of community (mainly comparing to Ubuntu), consistent package manager (Synaptic/Apt-get is wonderfull) and easy/smooth interface IMO ...

I use XFCE to work with Maya because of optimisation and excellent keyboard shortcut.

If you want to see more stuff concerning this subject, i suggest this blog of a mad man trying to make Maya work on Ubuntu distro :

Well, officially supported doesn't mean it won't run on other distros. I've used maya in fedora but now I'm using it in opensuse 11.2. Everything works fine, rendering with mental ray is just the same but I'm using 3delight.

Most problems were the motif thing but I'm sure it won't be there for maya 2011. As for the system itself, gnome is my main desktop and yast was a bit odd at the beginning but once the system is completely configured and customised you won;t have to deal much with it.

There are some areas where people find maya in linux somewhat unstable, like scrubbing with audio, but you should search to see if it would impact your work.

“Maya 2011 is also capable of running on other configurations such as boutique distributions of Linux. However, enumerating systems that are not tested and cannot be supported or that fall below the requirements for a productive user experience is beyond the scope of the online qualification charts.”

Hehe...Ubuntu and Fedora are just missing the same things with Maya, and have the same limitations, i experienced all of them :

-lack of system fonts, so Create Text Tool doesn’t work (those fonts/libs could be installed during setup...)
-component editor crashing very oftenly with smooth skin weighting etc..
-lack of video playblast output
-lack of serious file browser, still the same old open motif (fortunately KE_FileBrowser exist to change it)
-Most of Mel scripts doesn't fit correctly to Linux, a lot concerning windows size and button placement, very annoying !
. . .

Thanks.

as for fedora, i have never been able to get it to even run day to day stuff without it crapping out all the time, so that isn't really an option atm.

i am ecstatic with ubuntu though... only flash gives me a problem.. but it does in every distro i've tried so far.

it's been about a year since i used maya on redhat, and i remember there were some issues with play blast and sound... i did manage to get the sound to work good enough to work with it though. i don't really rememer what other problems i had... though, i am hoping there wouldn't be too many extra ones with another distro.

i've got the fonts thing pretty well under control too. and the 2011 stuff i have seen in the last week makes me really excited to get my copy from my reseller (be about 2 months though). i was just thinking that with the new UI (new file browser), it would be so much better to use ubuntu. i have finally got wine to run photoshop without any problems and if i could license my maya on an ubuntu machine, i think i would be set for a long time.

I am not so concerned so much with things that don't work at all.. more about things that will break because it was compiled on redhat based system when i try to use it on debian. i have used maya on windows and have it crash on my 8core workstation with 8g's of ram and render the same thing on a dual core with 3mb running linux. that is why i am going with this platform. i am interested in Ubuntu because i am so tired of having to manually reconfigure my box everytime i update the kernel. with ubuntu it is practically seamless.

i am just trying to determine if i should waste my 30 days of up and running support on a system that they won't be able to help me with, or should i just go and continue to dual-boot my system with 2 distros of linux... which kinda defeats the purpose of running maya on linux :)

but this does sound encouraging. thanks for the responses.

please continue to give feedback, as i don;t have to make a decision till next week.

used to run 2008 on ubuntu with no problems whatsoever.
but, now that 2011 has shed its motif skin, im sure
it will have alot less issues. Most of them were ui related, at least
under linux.

Maya runs just fine under Ubuntu, Kubutu, Linux Mint, Gentoo and just about any other distribution. A majority of the companies I have worked at, even big ones don't even run Red Hat (or they did in the beginning and transitioned away from it). You just need to know which libraries are needed or missing that you have to install in order for it to run properly. Though I don't even remember installing anything special with Ubuntu 9 except for Motif.

There are many threads on the Ubuntu forums where people sort out issue with running it. 99% of the issues are usually because of video card driver issues. If you have an ATI or Intel video card your SOL because they have crap Opengl/Linux drivers. Also the occasional ethernet card issue since as of Maya 2010 you need ipv6 setup to connect to a flexlm server.

@beaker

Thanks for the reply. that sounds good. i am running a nvidia quadro for video, though i do have some blinking weird things happening on windows xp64, i don't remember if i ever had any problems like this on linux, it has been so long since i used it regularly. i guess we will find out... maybe they have a new driver for me by now :)

thanks again, i'll go check ouot the ubuntu foroms for a while.

Just make sure your running the version of the video card drivers in the "Maya qualified drivers" list(google for it and an autodesk link will come up).
