View Full Version : Why is the Simple Scene Taking So much Time To Render?

03 March 2010, 03:47 PM
The scene is a very simple Spectral scene with 100,000,000 polygons. I have rendered much more complex and highly dense vegetation scene , but never took so long. it takes 4 hrs for the render bucket to complete one square of 64 x 64.

Here is the scene ::

I downloaded your scene and ran a few test renders (at 1600 x 1000). My computer is a Quad 4 * 2.3 Ghz with 8 gig memory running Vista 64 bit.

Render 1 quality "Final" - render time 1h33m.
Render 2 quality "Superior" - I killed the render at 85% after 4h12m (I wanted to do something else in Vue)
I then changed the ecosystem which increased the polygon count to 284,000,000. I then rendered:
Render 3 quality "Final" - render time 26m.

I think that the problem is the complexity of the ecosystem and rendering in "Superior" which takes much longer. I only render in "Final". I am a hobbyist and frankly see very little difference between "Final" and "Superior"

I hope that this has been helpful.

Thanks Jim. Found the same.
I rendered the scene with Final Quality And here are the outputs::

Thanks for the reply.

I saw your post and thought maybe I could help, but need more info. What version of Vue are you using? Also, what about your OS and system specs?

I can tell you that 64 bit Vue and 64 bit OS like Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate combined with really good hardware does wonders. If you really want to improve your render times, I would look into adding more computers to the process to work with "render nodes". You can get as fancy as you want, the only limits are the amount of money you want to spend doing it.

hardware alone can't replace experimentation with render settings - at least as far as efficiency goes.

Having gone from a 2 year old mid-range laptop, to an i7 "bells & whistles" I can still say any Vue user is going to get better long-term gains by learning how low they can go on render settings, and still get an acceptable result.

Ultra is not the best setting :)

Presets are good for begining. Totaly agree about learning how to render in Vue.
Understending how settings of subrays, antialis. ...etc effect render time and quality are essential. It's not magic settings that will work for every render.

I do like that e-on introduce render downscale options in Vue 8 for each material.

How do you set those downgrade options for rendering on a per surface basis? I am still gettign to grips with Vue 8.

It's on my list to record tutorials about render settings.
right now i am finishing tutorials about materials, next animation and render after.
each set about 35 tutorials.

I think I am getting a similar problems as well.

I try to render a simple sky at 3k, using final quality. it just get stuck at 3% and the render time estimate keep going up for 7-10hrs.

I am using an iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo + 4GB Ram

Is my system simply can't handle Vue?
