Title: Infosection
Name: Richard Rosenman
Country: Canada
Software: 3ds max Photoshop VRay
Submitted: 4th September 2003

This was a job for Infosection, a German company, that required four different renders of a newly designed character to serve as their upcoming video game host. As you can see, it was decided early in the production that the character would have fur, which therefore required a fair amount of research and development regarding fur solutions for 3dsmax. In the end, Shag:Hair was used because it provided unlimited flexibility and control over every aspect of the fur. The character was lit using traditional lighting techniques in conjunction with global illumination.

Swead is now featured in a spot for Jamba! You can check it out here:

On review, the third image looks remarkably similar to a guy I saw by the crap table in the Bellagio a couple of weeks ago...hmmm...

Really well done.

09-04-2003, 06:37 PM
cool character, but i also think the fur is a little wierd.

09-04-2003, 08:05 PM
What a great character! Another addition to your long list of amazing work Richard. :)

09-04-2003, 08:11 PM

front page!!!

09-04-2003, 08:59 PM

reminds me of

but i HATE the hair on the nose, it's disgusting (to me)
of the mole

09-04-2003, 10:30 PM

looks like the character belongs to the Crash Bandicoot's family......

anywayz really orignal and cool......

09-04-2003, 10:33 PM
I REALLY like it. Reminds me of a Sendak character. Good show.

09-05-2003, 04:00 AM
A+ work i must say. Its a character that has a lot of personality and a story could easily involve him. Great work

09-05-2003, 05:21 AM
I say leave the fur the way it it. The dirtbad hedgehog look is in this season. He'd loose his BADASS appeal if the fur was softer. I would like to see some teath seperation though. Maybe 1 missing tooth ? Come on then he'd be unstopable. lol. Ok all jokes aside, I'd go to the theater to see this MOFO use his rocketlauncher. Excelent work :buttrock:

09-05-2003, 06:05 AM
Im not usually the type to come on to a thread and blow more hot air into someones head.....BUT you sir deserve every last breath i got. YOUR site honestly humbled me beyond all reason:)

You rock fellow Canuck!!!

09-05-2003, 06:42 AM
Great design...its easy to show the characterlistic and easy to tell story....anyway, its remind me "silivan"....:p btw will it be animate?!

09-05-2003, 01:03 PM
just LOVE IT!:scream:

09-05-2003, 01:35 PM
Great work with getting a LOT of personality out of that character. You can really feel what it is feeling. Excellent!

09-05-2003, 02:24 PM
very nice work. Are you going to animate it? Would be funny seeing him do some stuff.

09-05-2003, 03:33 PM
great , great great !!
I love it
gratulations:applause: :applause:

09-05-2003, 04:46 PM
Can't wait to see him animated! :scream:

09-05-2003, 05:30 PM
  :surprised OUCH MY EYES

09-05-2003, 05:57 PM
A lot of personnality,even on stills !
Can't you see ??
He wants to move !!!

A great start.
I hope you will give him life.

09-06-2003, 12:32 AM
Thanks for your warm compliments, guys.

Yes, the next step is definitely animation and there is a possibility of a commercial featuring this character. He would, however, require a lot more work in order to make him animateable.

Of course, as soon as this happens, CGTalk will be the first place I post it. :)

Best regards,

09-08-2003, 03:43 AM
Whoa Richard, ya gotsa let me know when you complete stuff, heh I can't believe this one slipped by me. Incredible quality on the renders, and love the additional character designs you got going on. Have you given thought about using Shave & Haircut? Shag looks good tho, but the render time must've been crazy :). Also have a question for you, I'll email or call you tomorrow.

09-08-2003, 03:48 AM
This is great work, I have absolutely no crits whatsoever :applause:

09-08-2003, 03:49 AM
what program did you use ?

09-08-2003, 03:49 AM

man...this guy rocks.
I wouldn't change a thing.

09-08-2003, 03:50 AM
Oh this guys a riot!
Very cool stuff!!!

09-08-2003, 03:54 AM
Thanx, Tito.

And Leigh, it's a pleasure to finally meet you.

On that note, has anyone here used Shave and a Haircut? If so, what was your experience with it? Anyone have some tests done with it they'd like to share?
As Tito has mentioned, I've also heard good things about it but haven't seen too many examples.

Best regards,

09-08-2003, 03:54 AM
Pixar quality after all

09-08-2003, 04:18 AM
Now that was entertaining eh... right on guys

09-08-2003, 04:26 AM
hehehe this is pretty fun!!!

09-08-2003, 04:34 AM
Nice work, It could be perfect if you eliminate the few fur/hair of the stomach, and make contrast between hair and no hair... but it's only my opinion. He's ugly and wants money = bad. I really like it, the expressions and the model itself of course.

09-08-2003, 04:38 AM
Like I said at , Nice work ! :D :applause:

09-08-2003, 05:12 AM
Beeeah! He is so ugly ;) :p I Like the fur!:buttrock: :applause:

09-08-2003, 06:36 AM
very impreesive

09-08-2003, 06:44 AM

09-08-2003, 06:50 AM
first of all great character! love the personality.

My question is how did you manage to have the eye ball deform yet have control over where it's looking? unless you have the pupil a seperate object and let it follow the surface of the eye ball.

09-08-2003, 07:20 AM
great stuff sketches on your site are great
will you be able to show us the finished animation?

i'm playing around with shave and haircut now lots and lots of features its really great they have a 30day test on there site you can download. I highly suggest it i have nothing i'd like to share currently with it my only major issue with it is the rendertimes ARE KILLER even on just a test run the rendering times ARE HUGE but i highly recommend it.

09-08-2003, 07:58 AM
he is so cute, I wish he was A toy, so I could buy`:)
great job

09-08-2003, 08:08 AM
The emotion . . . The expression . . . The QUALITY! :: GASP :: AND . . . .. the furrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

:buttrock: :buttrock:

09-08-2003, 08:23 AM
Interesting and fun design.

However, I do think the poses could be a lot stronger, you are just skimming the surface on how those poses could read...

...any plans to animate him/it?

09-08-2003, 09:11 AM
I JUST love it !!
this is the kind of image that makes me happy for the day !
The design and the modeling are perfect to me....:applause:

Hi Richard, i've betatested Shave&Haircut 2 (the C4D version), i have it on my machine right now and i have to say it's a quite good package.

Pros: quite accurate results, great dynamics, relatively easy to stylize the hair.

Cons: high rendertimes, some shading problems (it's very difficult to obtain good results when backlighting, obtaining the rim lighting fx can be really really difficult, you have to use strooooong light sources and sometimes the only way to go is compositing)

I hope this helps, lemme know if you need some more infos about S&H, in the meantime look at this thread, maybe it can help you.

09-08-2003, 10:06 AM
Indeed Pixar quality, definately breathtaking.

Great poses too!

Maybe dirty up his teeth a bit, they scream 'COLGATE SMILE' at the moment! ;)

09-08-2003, 10:07 AM

09-08-2003, 01:33 PM
Cool, funny monster. :)

09-08-2003, 01:37 PM
I actually love the way the fur looks, and I think the hairy mole on the nose was a touch of genius :). My only crit would be regarding the teeth. I think they're a little out of character with that sparkling white look. I'd chip them a little and turn them yellowish.

09-08-2003, 01:41 PM
reminds me of george w .. especially the one with the bazooka .. hem
ammazing character .. i luv it :applause:

09-08-2003, 01:45 PM
Looks very cool but I must agree with the teeth. I think if he had a nice little chip somewhere that would be sweet!

Excellent tho! Everything on your website rockith too!

09-08-2003, 01:54 PM
Really good work!

09-08-2003, 02:03 PM
Hi Richard,

i´m allready monitoring your work for a while.
And i´m allways astonished from new, how creative and brilliant your work is.You´re like a good bottle of wine: the longer it last´s, the better it gets.

I´m absolutely AMAZED!! from this little cute, clumsy looking devil.

Wanna see more!!:applause:

very special regards

09-08-2003, 02:05 PM
BTW, your Toyota gig was outstanding!!

09-08-2003, 02:18 PM
this guy really rocks!! :buttrock: for me, i think the hair is a little bit too thick at some places and could need i little more variation... anything else is just lovely! keep up the good work...

09-08-2003, 02:26 PM
Fantastic Piece!

09-08-2003, 03:26 PM
Wow! The expressions are superb!

I can't wait to see some animations!!!!

P.D: Is Sulley's little brother?

09-08-2003, 03:46 PM
gah, he's so cute

09-08-2003, 03:54 PM
This is an incredible image. So much character and energy within this character. The model is excellent and the textures are incredible. Reminds me Monsters Inc also. The fur looks really nice man. I could imagine how cool the animation is gonna be on this one. Beautiful work. EXCELLENT. you deserve front page!

09-08-2003, 04:45 PM

09-08-2003, 04:46 PM
Simply great :>

09-08-2003, 04:53 PM
He's brilliant, I'm sure you have a big plans wit this sweet guy. Yeah, he looks a litlle bit PIXAR, but they doesn't have patent for this kind of characters, do they?

09-08-2003, 07:09 PM
This kind of $hit impresses the buh-jeeeezus out of me.

Send your reel to Pixar. Its not too late to start working on The Incredibles and Cars!

.....I would

09-08-2003, 07:51 PM
Amazing work!

I think you may start to build up pixar :p

09-08-2003, 08:08 PM
I'll be redundant in adding, "Love it!"

About the teeth, tho. They look fine as they are. The rest of the character isn't dirty, why should his teeth be? I like the simple shapes used to represent something that can be overly complicated. Well, maybe a little chip wouldn't hurt. NO, forget I said it.

09-08-2003, 08:18 PM
This guy is sooo cool! Itīs funny just to look at him!

09-08-2003, 09:23 PM
yeah! really amazing model!
waiting with excitement for some animation!

09-08-2003, 09:41 PM

09-09-2003, 12:09 AM

09-09-2003, 12:42 AM
Wow, quality stuff. Definitely pixar quality.

09-09-2003, 01:22 AM

09-09-2003, 09:26 AM

09-09-2003, 09:49 AM
High quality as always. :)

Fantastic image!

09-09-2003, 11:22 AM
Very nice work, yes fur needs some work but still very nice, fun.

09-09-2003, 12:13 PM

I think there is good reason for thicky hair. As I couldn't imagine this guy with soft "teddybear" looking hair, yea maybe like sweet Saly form Monsters inc. or others.

09-09-2003, 01:29 PM
The BEST!!!!!!! character I' ve seen on this forum so far! Bravo!:applause:

09-09-2003, 02:33 PM
Heheh, you made me laugh, excellent work

09-09-2003, 02:38 PM
Yeah! i would like to see it in a movie ;) looks like monsters inc or something ;)

09-09-2003, 02:43 PM
Nice character, Richard, I like it :)

I don't like so many people saying it's "Pixarish". So, they did a movie 'bout fur, so what? They did great job, they do a great job, but I think there's many people that could do even a better job, on smaller scales of course. Creativity will always come out of the most surprising places, otherwise it's wouldn't be creativity, but production. You are a perfect example for that I think, and I want to wish you good luck with all your future projects.

I have a few Q's on the making, you wrote it's Vray+Shag, and someone noted on the render times and stuff, I couldn't stop to wonder bout something else - have you tried to animate the guy with proper fur behavior (collision+weight)?
I don't think I've seen an anim like that done in Max and I think this would be a really interesting point on how close it is to match the quality of Maya/PRMan.

Again, outstanding work and good luck on your future projects. :)

09-09-2003, 04:33 PM
What's wrong with being compared with don't make 300+million dollars in the box office for sucking....enough about that.

You're character is simply the expressions and I love the concept...I personally think it's one of the better cartoon characters i've seen here in long time....nice animate him:)

Edit: After looking at it for a minute...reminds me a little of the 'Wild Things' Book characters...just a little modified....:)

09-09-2003, 05:40 PM
Yeah! Saying it looks like it came from Pixar is one of the highest compliments (in my opinion) one can give! (and its not because of the fur, its because it has the same tooney, yet refined, funny, creative, interesting look)

The hair just reminds people of Monsters Inc in particular.

I agree that I'd like to see some animation tests with this bad boy, to see how that fur will react to movement.

09-09-2003, 07:04 PM
Hi there Richard. Man i am fan of your job from long time ago. :)

I like your animations. Even for Broadcast publicity, and even for simple products you know how to put "LIFE" on your animations, and everything looks always nice and good to see.

I liked this cartoon Character a lot. ;) The thing i could talk something about and suggest to be your point of tweaking, is the Fur. I donīt know whatīs wrong for sure. Maybe itīs looking a bit thicker , or thereīs something strange with the shadowns (Maybe smooth them ?)... So...The works looks very good !

See you later man !

09-09-2003, 09:06 PM
Very Crazy this image....

09-09-2003, 09:36 PM
hey yo i saw the imgaes on your website and also the imgaes under gallery finalrender ...
can u tell me what plugins it is for having this radomly created squarez extruded !?!?

09-10-2003, 12:00 AM
wow that look very sweet!! I like would like to see some animation :)

let me know once you got some done. very well done!

09-10-2003, 09:01 AM
I like it very much.
no comments, except the fur... I think is too thick. maybe do it wit more fur and less thickness ?

can we see some unsmoothed wires??

keep up the "evil" work

09-10-2003, 09:03 AM
UPDATE pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee

09-10-2003, 12:52 PM
Bah! I'll just hand this over to you now :p Seriously tho, this monster could be in the lineup for Monsters Inc. The fur on him is great, but the bits on his stomach can tend to be a bit distracting, and Bentllama did have a good point about pushing the poses more, but it's great nonetheless!. Can't wait to see him alive along with the other cast.

You have received the CGtalk choice award .Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Awespiring work!

upon receiving this award, it guarantees you a spot in the cgtalk gallery hall of fame ( - which you are now placed

P.S. Please email me @ so I can send you the award .psd file

09-11-2003, 02:51 AM

Thank you for your compliments and critiques!

Well, to update, here's a few things...

Yes, the fur could be better. I personally like the thickness of it because it makes his look raggedy and suits his character but what I think is the problem is that there's not enough fur. This would also explain why the bits on his stomach are not quite right because you can see individual scattered little hairs. If there was five times the amount of fur, you'd see patches instead of strands which would have looked much better.

This was purely a hardware issue because my machine was practically melting just trying to render this much hair. Although this would not have been the case with volumetric hair, I find geometric hair is the only real way to light hair properly, as well as being included in global illumination solutions. I would like to get more ram and give it another shot.

Animation. Yes, that's the next step although he requires a lot of work because the mesh hasn't been skinned very well - skinned just well enough to allow me to pose him in what you see. However, our lead animator at Redrover, Kyle Dunlevy, is very excited about giving him a try and he intends to put him through a few animation tests. Obviously, we'll post anything for you guys to see as soon as there's something.

AniMo. The boxes in the FinalRender section were created with the Greeble plugin for 3dsmax.

Tito, as always, thanks for the award! I'm not sure I deserve it though because there's some really wicked talent here which just blows my work away! :)

Thanks again, guys, for such a great response.

Best regards,

09-11-2003, 04:00 AM
Congratulation Richard. You deserve it a 100%
