View Full Version : Carnival - VFX Challenge - electroganic / russ_c

09-01-2003, 07:27 PM

This will be electroganic's and my first vfx challenge post. A little late in the game, but here is our pitch:

The ten ships are capsule like structures rope-bound to primitive hot air balloons. Wafting in from the night sky the capsules land consecutively closer to the camera in four distinct clusters starting with four capsules and then descending by one with each cluster. As each cluster touches down in the forest clearing they will begin transforming into common carnival forms whose sizes are relevant to the number of capsules in the particular cluster. The balloons' canvas stretches into tents and the capsules sides unfold into massive wooden displays. Welcome to the carnival.

We will be posting some basic concept and layout art in the following days.

Nice idea with the tents, looking forward to see it :)

Some handdrawing will be better.

09-07-2003, 01:36 AM
We are going for a circa 1900's look, so we decided that our capsules will be old trunks, attatched by rope to hot air filled patchwork balloons. This Drawing shows what our trunks will look like, as well as a diagram of the basic construction from balloon to tent. In the upper right hand corner is a birds eye view of where the elements will land relative to the camera. We will post more concept art as we finish them.

I like very much concept. So far nothing to crit'. Waiting for more :)

This is a concept for a stage that two balloon-trunks, will transform into.

electroganic i have to say, that this is a really cool design man. i love it! Keep it up ! can't wait to see anymore ideas or models!

It's F***ING AWESOME lol

Good luck!

Alright, electroganic and I have been pounding away at the freak stage model from the concept previously posted. Having finished the model details I moved on to the ticket booth concept while electroganic finishes the stage textures. The ticket booth appears closest to the camera so we will need to pay particular attention to the details of the transformation.

The Concept shows a simple front orthographic of the ticket window. Two lanterns hang from above for low levels of illumination. Most panels will have a wood carved, scuffed paint look. Included in the picture is a basic breakdown of how the trunk top will split and fly up to create the ticket booth's roof while the bottom will extend to create the base boards. Note that the metal rungs from the chest become the rungs that the lanterns hang from.

Very good. Your drawings/concepts are very nice. If you manage to model and animate this on time it will be superb :D

Thank you Knut. We have been giving this project all the time we can spare...which doesn't seem to be enough. More concept art should be posted by tonight since the ticket booth model was wrapped up yesterday. Still finding a good plate though.

The following concept is for balloon/tent structures V, VI, VII(look at russ_c's field chart in the first image to get an idea of its location relative to the camera). The Devil facade will be the front entrance to the tents that pop up, and will have a similar old worn paint look as the other structures. The model sheets have just been finished and russ_c will begin modeling while I texture the ticket booth. We will post the models we have worked on as soon as possible.

Hope you manage to get something finished. I quickly discovered in my pre-production planning that i would not have time to work on this contest. The challenge is too comlplex (see my post in the challenge issues thread).

Anyway..your line art is very good, reminds me of sketches in a Walt Disney art book i have (Art from pinocchio, snow white etc.), exept this is made by Disneys evil twin.

The Demon Entry model is complete and UV's are layed for texturing. I attempted to model the face as true to the orthographics and perspective sketch electroganic provided. The banner added at the top will be a wooden sign wtih something written in another language. The doors in the mouth will be painted like the back of a throat and the demon will be a crimson red. More wires to come.

From here on out we will be pushing it all the way till the end...I wish there was an extension. :scream:

Moving as fast as we can. The freak stage model will have a night time color motif with stars painted on old wood panels. A curtain will hang from inside the chest cavity. More to come...

Farking brilliant!!!!!!

This is great! Can't wait to see some animations!:)

Your sketches are detailed and very well turned into 3d.

You did a very good job modeling everything. Do you have the transformations worked out? I've been unfortunately too tied up to begin this yet, but I like this challenge idea.

I see you're using maya also. Can't wait to see more.

I really like the angel wings on the skeleton. Keep up the good work

This is a ruff Photoshop previs concept for what we want the final shot to look like. This will help us work out the overall mood of the piece.

09-26-2003, 10:38 AM
Here is another version looking out from the forest with a path leading into the carnival.

09-27-2003, 10:29 AM
this looks great guys. I love the mood you've created with these pre-vis shots. I think the second works better. Just the idea that this strange "carnival" is situated (or situates itself) deep in the forest adds a great spooky element to the environment. And the path out of the forrest, leading too the carnival, is almost as if the carnival itself is beconing whoever the poor sole that happens to stumble upon it, to venture in further, despite any aprehension they might have. It's great. I know this is just a pre-vis, but If anything I'd say add just a little more fog to the foreground, and really exagerate the kind of dingy feel you've got going. It's working great so far, just push it a little bit farther to make this carnival seem even that much more unsettling. The models look great as well. The amount of work put into them and their overall concept really comes through in the end, or close to end, result. Overall guys it's coming along great. Keep up the good work... I can't wait to see the final product.

Thanks for the good critique rusdom. Electroganic and I agree that the second one is much better. The trees help to frame everything and enclose the shoot to feel more Closter phobic, which is what we are going for.

Our apologies for not posting more WIP pics, maybe a last minute few will go up tomorrow. We have been to busy trying to figure how to animate since neither of us have done so before.

Thanks again.

Russ and I have been working diligently on this project dedicating any spare time we have to try and complete it, but alas the time has come and we are still not finished. The basic animation is complete with the exception of the ticketbooth transformation, and a few tweaks here and there. This is our first animation, so learning a new tool set in a short amount of time has been an interesting experience, kinda like learning to swim by jumping in the deep end.

Well here are a few close up renderings. I guess if there's no extention we will be posting the final version as we finish.

The Freak Stage

Everything looks fantastic except the texture you've got on the demon. I dunno, I just imagined it to have a polished wood kind of texture, but that's just me. :)

Great work guys, this is really looking great!!

Yeah...:hmm: , that is one of those last minute place holder things. Electroganic and I didn't get to the Demon's texture or the bones on the skeleton yet. We were both to busy scratching our heads at the animation menu's in maya this last week.

We'll fix it up right and dandy just for you megalces!

Alright, Electroganic and I agreed to post a Maya playblast of the animation we have blocked.

Rough Animation Layout (Quicktime 1.8MB) (

A few notes:

-This will be rendered in layer pass to better control timing in post of each tent relative to the animation sequence

-Neither of us have ever animated so picking up those tools in the last week has been interesting. Suggestions on the tent transformation would be helpful (we used several blend shapes)

-Certain objects appear in areas that are unexceptable due to our "scandalis animation techniques" (aka the demon head transforming up)...This will be fixed by masking with roto shapes in post

-The ticket booth animation isn't done so we just dropped it in to show where the chest will fall and transform

Suggestions desired!:D

oh I almost forgot here are the tents

wow guys this all looks great! I can't leave a good long crit cause I'm rushing to get out the door :) but I just wanted to say I thougth the demon texture looked pretty cool, sure it could use some work, but I think it shouldn't really be a "polished wood" look just cause I don't think anything in this environment would be polished at all, maybe it had been at one time, but now it's all grungy and run down. Just my two cents :) great work guys

10-01-2003, 07:10 PM
I hope you are planning on finishing this piece even though the challenge is officially over because it's great what you have so far.

10-01-2003, 09:02 PM
Thanks barcode...our apologies with the images we have been posting. Everything thus far has been done on 2 G4's and the gama on apple's are considerably brighter. When I got to work this morning I noticed how dark everything really is on a PC.

Anyways, we do plan to finish...we will continue to post wip's on this forum.
