This time I am getting in on this early. I will have a team set up in the coming days. Once we have our team in place we will begin posting. I can give you a title for our film (trailer) now. the title is

FROM THE FUTURE
This will be an homage to the B-movie sci-fi classics of movies passed. Incorporating CG effects with live action cinematography. The objective here is to provide some great effects and and animation with comping while capturing the classic elements of the B-Movie Sci-Fi genre. We have a lot of great ideas and will posting more soon.

Robot Viking Pirates
From Outer Space
FROM THE FUTURE!!!
(Synopsis and Outline)
The main objective is to create great visual effects and animation using modern settings and ideas while pulling from clichés of 50's sci fi B movies. So while the trailer will be comedic in satire of these 50's elements the visual effects, modeling, and animation will attempt to be a showpiece.
An off course ship traveling through space and time crash lands on earth. A group of people witness the crash and want to learn more of it's strange origin. When to find the craft they discover it to be something "other worldly". The ship is a prisoner ship carrying robotic Viking pirates from the future. Being both Viking and pirate in they want to claim the planet for themselves. One of the robots wants to change his evil ways and must help the humans from his evil companions.

Maybe a woman could fall in love with the hero both and say something lame like "I'm torn between my love for pirates and my hate for Vikings." In an over acted kind of way.
Having people point to the sky in a Dutch angle.

Text the is overly exaggerated.
Text also states things that's are grossly misunderstood due to lack of knowledge on the subject or technology. This would go well with "The Moon" Cliché.
This is my favorite cliché. It stems from misconceptions of outer space and our closest planetary body being the moon. So a lot of science fiction revolved around the moon and funny things like,
"Lasers and the Moon"
"Radiation levels and The Moon"
and so forth. A good example of a way we can use this is using the text and technology misconceptions For instance:
"The visitors found there way here through a radioactive gravity bubble around The Moon, that pulled them through their space and time to ours. The bubble was unstable and it left the ships pilots in their own space and time. They must have fallen on the moon. They will be safe for the time being because everyone knows the moon is habitable. Maybe the moon is a prison in the future for these scoundrels."
How awesomely B-Movie is that?!.
Wipes. Gotta have wipes for every scene. Wipes are early B movie magic. What better way to say "This shot is done, and the next one is so great that we have to ease you into it."
These are some good trailers from the 50's that would could use to get ideas of how the shots will go down.

Most of what I am putting together right now is the detailed outline and shot by shot descriptions. Once I have that together I will make the boards. Right now it's hectic. I am wrapping up a project at work which will free up a lot of my time so this something that is slow going but I am working on it.

This is the shot outline and I know it seems like it's slow going right now but the planning is important. So this is the shot outline. It's not definitive but It could be if everyone on the team agrees.
Shot 01 - Opening
This shot begins with a shot of earth with the moon in close proximity panning slowly.
We then see a rift in space and time open up near the moon and a ship comes hurling through. The shot completes with some huge text wiping on reading "A Rift In Space and Time"
Shot 02 Citizens
This shot shows people pointing to the sky using a Dutch angle.
Shot 03 - Ship Entry
This shot continues from the first as we see an object coming through the atmosphere (sort of like a comet) flying across the sky
Shot 04 - Ship Crash
We see the ship crash in the distance with a large blast. Text wipes on to read "Beings From Another World"
Shot 05 -07 - People, Robots, Heart Beats
In this series of shots we will see the faces of concerned humans as the next shot dissolves to the sound of a heart beat to show the robots and then a second heart beat dissolves to show the robots faces closer or maybe some sort of burst of energy coming from the robots. Each beat is about 2 to 3 seconds and slow in interval.
Shot 08 - Robot Attack
We see two of the robots attacking a street or some buildings
Shot 09 - People Running
We see people fleeing the scene at another Dutch angle.
Shot 10 - Scientific Analysis
In the spirit of B-Movies passed, we will have a scientist making an assumption to the origins of the robots. The dialogue will go something like "The visitors found there way here through a radioactive gravity bubble around The Moon,(10-2: we then see a shot of the gravity bubble around the moon) that pulled them through their space and time to ours.(10-3: the shot cuts back to a dramatic shot of the scientist) The bubble only allowed metallic matter through and it left the ships pilots in their own space and time. They must have fallen on the moon. They will be safe for the time being because everyone knows the moon's atmosphere is breathable(10-4: As the scientist speaks the last line we see the three robots standing next to each other ready to conquer with smoke and debris around them. This shot would be a low angle looking up at them We will see the hero bot turn his head to his comrades to differentiate himself to the audience) . Maybe the moon is a prison in the future for these scoundrels."
Shot 11 - Robot Softy
We see either a woman hugging one of the bots or a man shaking it's hand while an actors voice says something like "We have to trust you, because we can't stop them without you."
Shot 12 - Robot Feelings
A woman has her back to the hero bot and says something like "I'm torn between my love for pirates and my hate for Vikings." With the hero bot in the BG rack focused.
Shot 13 - Robot Disagreement
This shot has the hero bot and the other enemy bots in a disagreement saying "You are programmed to destroy humans. You will take from them everything or be destroyed." This shot has the robots face to face.
Shot 14 - Robot Protection
We see bullets being shot at a human character as a robot huddles over them to protect them from the bullet barrage.
Shot 15 - Hero Bot is Hero
This shot will have the hero bot rising up to stand. Text will reveal to say "An Unlikely Hero"
Shot 16 - Hero Bot is Hit
This shot will show a slow mo of the hero bot being hit in the face in slow motion
Shot 17 -Onlooker Slow Mo
This shot will cut from the previous to show either the love interest of the robot or a friend scream silently in slow motion in reaction to the hero bots dismay.
Shot 18 - Evil Bots
This shot will show us the evil bots standing tall looking victorious and text will wipe to reveal "Text will wipe Dramatically"
Shot 19 - Hero Bot Goes Epic
In this shot we see the Hero Bot getting angry and energy around him begins to build as he dramatically releases the energy from his body. The resulting flash will reveal the title of the movie trailer.
Shot 20 - Ending Shot

Almost a cross between the two. The faces being a simple screen that displays emotions is part of the comical and the bodies would be like those sky captain bulky kind of designs. Kinda like Iron Giant as well. Each bot would have some distinct features built right into their mesh. Kinda like the beard idea I threw at you in the email.

Sorry, been a weird week. Here are some doodles, I'm going to continue to do more, but I was wondering how much of the viking/pirate we wanted to incorporate. It seems difficult to conceptually push both ideas and they be strong, visually, and I was wondering if I could do something weird like have their head be a transformer...
...like, say they have the same body regardless, but their head sinks into their chest cavity and an unseen transformation occurs, the head pops back out as something different. I want to make the transformation seen, but I also realize the work associated with that and I don't want to over complicate the piece.

These look like you are headed in the right direction. The main thing we have to keep in mind is the rigging. We don't want to complicate the task of animation and rigging. As far as the overall look. We want to keep their designs in the realm of 50's sci fi with a slight modern twist. This way we can also hold true to the B-Movie of the 50's and 40's. That's the kind of "camp" we are going for.

So.. the robots I imagine are kind of bulky in design and not really built for swift movements. More like tanks. Broad shoulders but skinny pivots for waists. I like the number two version you have going. If it were a little bulkier and heavier looking. The robots are built more for slow progressive destruction and not really fast and accurate.

Also keep in mind you would be modeling the final robot and based on the time constraints keep that in mind. You don't want to create a concept that you couldn't knock out fast. The turn around would be insane. Like a week. Two tops. I know that sounds crazy and is asking a lot but the deadline approacheth.

These are elegant. I of course like them. Will these be easy for you to model. I like the first one the most. Maybe you could use whichever you choose as the base and then just tweak it a bit to make the second bot.

Will they be easy, of course not. My plan is to construct basic masses for them and then if time allows the rest of the detailed panels and segments can be added. In their absence will be a slick, smooth surface that will work regardless of the additional panels (but wouldn't it be cool if I found the time and could get these into a motion setting?)
Anyway, we'll talk more about this today and I'll begin to map out the geometry. The base model can probably be finished in two five hour sessions so I'll do half today and half Friday.

Robot is almost done. I was conflicted and decided to just finish the whole thing instead of dealing with the hassle of reintroducing assets. It will probably be done tonight or tomorrow, depending on how sick I want this thing to look. Let me know what you think.

aaah man its gonna be fun animating these guys! Quick suggestions and only if they're easy to do btw, maybe the hands could be scaled up a bit on the model? I like the beefyness of the hands on the concept art, and also, you might have already done this but I can't tell from the pic, is the shoulder joint directly attached to the torso or does it round off and kind off attach into a hole in the torso piece? I would rather it be the latter because if it is directly attached we will get more organic deformations on the shoulder (which would be bad on a robot). Other than that this big guy looks sick.

I can send you the scene file if you're ready to begin animating, Rico, otherwise I'm going to continue to tweak the color/texture of the beast until perfection. If you're ready though we need to move forward if we ever hope to finish this in time.

I'm Ready to start rigging! Just be sure that the UVs and Geometry are final before you hand it over so we won't run into any iteration problems later.

Are the only differentiations that the good bot has green face and evil bot has red face? I thought we could maybe add some geometrical but i suppose we are too crunched for time.
I plan on shooting as soon as I can. This week I have been very busy and I'm not exactly sure when to shoot but at the latest it would be this weekend. I will scout some places to shoot this week.

I regretfully have decided to end our work on this project. There are a lot of good elements here but time is not on our respective side and our lives dictate more important matters right now. We will to some degree be completing this project but it will exist outside of the competition and under a new deadline that works for our group. Good luck to the other participants. I look forward to competing in the next competitions that come by.
