Time to introduce Team New York Film Academy.
As it happens our 2nd semester project had a robot and spaceships attack manhattan theme. so we are going for it. Our deadline is mid may so we'll see what we get for this April deadline...

So far the hardest part has been getting the students to register. I saw Bat hit the reply button today so I'm just missing Matt. Close enough to get going. So here we are Team New York Film Academy coming at you from the one year animation program.

wow, such a large team. doesn't leave much hope for our small 3 man team.
cool designs, although very slick and sophisticated for a b-movie perhaps? looks fantastic ether way! cant wait to see more, i have bookmarked your thread!

02 February 2010, 03:15 AM
thanks for the kind words Daliakb (, we are aiming high.
that said we just had a major setback called snow. we were supposed to do our live action shoot this thursday-friday. but snow happened. we did our interior shots on friday but most of the movie is exterior and really needs to be snow free...
so our shooting dates are pushed back to a tentative march 5-6.
now we have to start animating without plates and fit the two together later.

02 February 2010, 06:11 AM
wow, that it a set back. Im sure you will work it through!!! thats the challenge right? lol :) best of luck

02 February 2010, 04:01 PM
I am pretty sure we will be able to manage it. I have come up with aplan for what scenes we can start animating without plates.
We also need to push on with preliminary texturing. I don't want to get too far into it until we have had a few more classes with boaz livny on mental ray and compositing with Nuke.

Oddly a bigger challenge is team management. Despite repeated requests i have not yet been able to get the cinematography students who are shooting our plates to register with CG talk and therefore get our piece eligible for the cinematography award.

02 February 2010, 08:23 PM
wow, hey this should be pretty interesting. Cant wait to see the FX rolling in. Keep up the good works.

02 February 2010, 09:40 PM
Great pre-vis, having trouble looking at some of your pictures though. Keep it up!

02 February 2010, 01:53 PM (

we are now experimenting with the how to control teh vines that attack the robots

Play Video >> (

confession: the above image has nothing to do with the video movement test. it is the roots paint effect straight out of the box. is is a look we are considering but it is still undecided.
to see what we are really testing, hit the play video button.

02 February 2010, 02:18 PM

check out ivy generator wich is really cool for such things!

i dont know maybe you used this but if not its worth to check it out :)

02 February 2010, 07:04 PM (

this technique of making the vines grow is a little easier.
we now need to test it with textures. if it works this is the technique we will use.
we are still looking for the "look" for the vines.

02 February 2010, 08:46 PM
staszek, thanks for the tip on the ivy generator. i will check it out see how animatable it is.

thanks for the interest overcontrast and froforces.

Fro: Not sure why you are having trouble viewing the images but most of the more recent posts have been video tests of robots and ships on turntables so make sure you push the "play video" button.

now back to texturing.

Hey man this is starting to look pretty good. The model is cool but the walk isn't very robotic. Did you try letting the robots foot hang in the air mid stride to give it more weight??

02 February 2010, 10:34 PM
thanks for the advice, we are just beginning to play with movement style. this is the first test for that robot where it didn;t demonstrate a need for a massive rebuild.

the six legged walk in the post above did require a rebuild because of interpenetration of the mesh at the joints.

onwards and upwards

02 February 2010, 11:18 PM
Hey man this is starting to look pretty good. The model is cool but the walk isn't very robotic. Did you try letting the robots foot hang in the air mid stride to give it more weight??

which robot do u mean?

02 February 2010, 06:14 PM (

here is a still from the shoot of interiors that we did. we are hoping that the snow goes away by next friday when we are trying again to shoot the exteriors.

02 February 2010, 03:06 PM
first time I see green screen that is teal.. Is it key'able?
Shadows and wrinkles is going to cause you troubles in post.

But what is the story here? tenticle plants, robots and the woman in an antique dress?!

03 March 2010, 07:03 PM
green screen is a keyable (although i admit to having seen better). best thing that can be said about it is that it provides an excellent challenge for my students to learn keying.

the story is a secret.

actually, i was planning on revealing it when i post our animatic/layout in about two weeks.
the rough assembly edit of footage with stills from maya. our shoot has been rescheduled for this Friday saturday after getting snowed out a couple of weeks back.

the most extreme reduction of the story is:

robots and spaceships attack manhattan. magical plant lady from another world intervenes. robots and ships defeated.

03 March 2010, 09:24 AM
Looking good guys! I really like the models and vine work!

03 March 2010, 02:27 PM
Starting to look good very EPIC! One thing is are all the robots and space ships and such from the same race. Or are they all different races.

Right they don't look like they are especially the bugs.

Just one thought Good Luck

03 March 2010, 11:07 PM
thanks for the support gregmcquay and mnartgirl.

and nope, the robots are not supposed to be too similar. in fact we want more of the disparate look that you would get when dumping over my son's toy box which would give you power rangers, storm troopers, and bakugan all jumbled together fighting it out. they are unified somewhat by insignia, color scheme and a varying degree of insect influence. but really the mechs are almost as diverse as a child's toybox.

03 March 2010, 11:10 PM
The earth lady, your last update represent your thread bad in the main b-movie video forum so I suggest updating it soon:)
It hasn't got my attention until now because of the thumbnail I think.
But your work is pretty good so far, I loved it...

Here is a stab at our 30 second trailer of our longer story.
Obviously the compositing is not all there anytime you see blank sky, think spaceships, empty frames, think robots with guns.
The music is a placeholder.
More as soon as we finish texturing next week.

Keep it up:thumbsup:

03 March 2010, 07:03 AM
this is very fun in a silly way, with the goddess lady and scorpion robot. Would be really cool if she was a bit more "pretentious" in her movement.
What is really cool about old monster movies, is that the hero, or the monsters or whatever had little more than their movement and bodypostures in the movies they were in. So many did a really hard job posing in the "coolest" way possible, and being really thorough in their movement. Which usually are so overdone, that it seems extremely silly.
On the other hand, its funny that she moves in a kind of film school first year manner.

the robot with the giant fangs on the back is quite cool as well. Kind of modern i think.

keep it up.

03 March 2010, 06:45 PM (

Here is a tighter edit of our 30 second trailer.
Obviously the Cg is on the way, the mothership here is a stand in from the interwebz, and the title is Smash Crash Crunch, not boom.

the image is WIP texturing. Hopefully all the students will hae their texturs done by the end of this week so we can start rendering and compositing.

and the fun goes on, here at the New York Film Academy

Good luck to you and your team!:)

03 March 2010, 10:04 PM
thanks christophe and jankosh. your support is appreciated.

As to whether it is sci fi or B movie really gets to teh question of what is a B movie?
To me a B movie is any movie that doesn't have A list actors/directors or budget. Budget being the most. You do the best with what you have to make your vision come true. The effects and acting from 50's era look hoaky to us now because we are more sophisticated viewers, but they kicked butt back then.

So we are doing a B movie. Someday we could be A-list, but not today, not yet.

03 March 2010, 12:09 AM
I agree with you, surely B-Movies:buttrock: belong to low budget category and also to old age looking. Time and money matter over B-actors.. B-scenario.. B-directing..
However some A movies can belong to B category if one of these mentioned elements appear in it

03 March 2010, 09:46 PM (

our empire state building textured and ready for its explosive close up

03 March 2010, 10:06 PM (

Software: Illustrator

a few of you have commented on how different the designs are of the robots and spaceships are. one of teh unifying elements isthe logos that will be placed on each of the robots in order to show reflect status and unity of origin. in this way we are balancing the heterogenous design with a homgoneous order overlaying it.

04 April 2010, 07:05 PM (

a motion test for the vines and almost finished textures for the scorpion, we just need to get the logo on the face so it is more visiblw when coming at the camera climbing up the empire state building.

thanks Christophe,
the ironing scene is just 4 shots and it ends with a POV shot of her looking at the television close up. the close up is the only oine of the 4 that will be in the 30 second. we will have a longer trailer after our making of video. our goal for the two trailers is to leave you wanting to watch the whole movie.

our whole movie will be done at the end of May at the end of our semester at the New York Film Academy. so you will have to wait a while to see the whole thing, I hope the suspense isn't too bad, I promise to post a link when we are done.

geek fact: the show the ironing woman is watching is sameeta's second short animation film from our first semester. it is called "Exotic Creation" and can be seen here:

04 April 2010, 06:23 PM a defocused background to make it feel more like the live action footage

Try to compare it to some real footage working with same scale. The defocus is too strong imho. I would say a half of what you have will work better. Keep up good work folks, hope you will finish on time!

04 April 2010, 10:27 PM (

thanks for the feedback.

here is another one with less defocus (no sound this time).

we also had a very timely color grading class today with boaz livny. as a result the robot bockground is graded to the girls background. the robot is then color graded to his background.

we also added edgeblur and a little grain in nuke.

New York Film Academy animation team rocks on.

picture says more then words: - and even this is a really soft effect. Compare the caliber of the machine gun and the bullet hole - does it shoot darts :)
About the grade, colder background and warmer skin tone would give a better impact of these shot.

good luck guys,
btw the car shot looks superb!
