Storyboard seems great...
Trying to imagine the shots, that will be very enjoyable to watch i think...
Good luck with the work.

Thanx, I'v been animating previz for 3 weeks. at the moment it's minut and a half. Full lenght will be about 2 - 2.5 minutes. At the moment there is no point to post half done animatix, but I'll post few quickies.

ocean shots quick mattes

I liked the music synchronization :)

03 March 2010, 02:46 PM
Music is cool, and the composition is cool, but frankly I didnt understand what happened.

03 March 2010, 03:07 PM
music will be different in final composite. for now it's just for the kicks. :)
in this scene rubber alien tryies to dehydrate a bicycle then gives up and get physical with it. Alien gets shot by an average Joe who gets dehydrated in a glips of second.

This scene will be used as a news footage that will run on screens of the Time Square in NY. I allready made it less shacky and retimed end a little longer.

03 March 2010, 10:30 PM
very cool. i like the design alot more when i see them in motion than in the storyboard. Cool!

Sorry for the quality, this images I took on my phone because was too lazy to screencapture them.
Also the previz is allmost done, 2 scenes of 15 in total is left to finish.

Hi Anton,

Great looking movie matte's. The aliens look wonderfully weird. Can't wait to see more.

PS: if you want people to find your thread, you should put the link in your signature. I was under the impression that you weren't competing in this challenge.

03 March 2010, 02:54 PM
thx Mista Fraggadeli for the suggestion :) done
aliens now are low poly, there is alot more of weirdeness about them yet to come. But there will be only one close up shot of them in the end of the trailer just before they get to know HOH intimately :)

Over a month of work and a little over 2 'n half minute story.
Alien invasion part is less animated, Hoh kicking aliens more. Also more action in the second part :)

Music and sound designs are placeholders for now.

Hopefully you'll like the story :)

Alien will have something similar to shark's skin texture.

cc are welcomed :)

fixing Hoh textures and trying it in composite.

scene introduces Hoh.

Hoh'll be dressed in red moncler and a blue t-shirt that says - 'kiss me i have superpowers' :)

04 April 2010, 08:27 PM (

composite wip. render settings are very low so mind the grain. :)
spend last weekend unwrapping meshes, therefor learned that modeling, animating and then unwrapping, texturing is a bad idea.
for the skin I used refracting mat with fog color(vray).
later on I'll make it with sss2 cos rendring is taking too much time - at the moment it's 3:19 at frame size 910x512 .

04 April 2010, 02:30 AM (

It's 5 o'clock in the morning and I finaly tweaked colors and look that I like.
Fixed textures also :)

tell me what you think, I'd could really use some feetback at this stage :)

04 April 2010, 06:05 AM
Hi Anton.

I have been following your thread since the beginning and i am very impressed. It only gets better and better.:applause:
I really have no suggestions to make because for my untrained eye this comp looks perfect and i am dying to see what you cook up in the animation part.

Good luck with your huge project :)

04 April 2010, 08:21 AM
Last WIP test looks great. Cant wait see it in motion

04 April 2010, 10:09 AM
thank you Karel and Staszek. I'm glad that you like my work and you don't mind the over clamped colors :) I'll leave it be then.
Animation is as it is, I'm not an animator anyway but I'll to create trailer that will make you forget that you watching 3d and start following the story. that is actually the main goal to tell the story about world without water :)

Thanks again and next I'll do a little planning and start with particles.

04 April 2010, 01:03 AM (

Character sheet.

In total texturing both of the main characters, Hoh and the Pacman, alien took me about a week. all textures are from 1024 to 2048 in size, can hold a close up for couple of seconds :)

Hoh has a red moncler jacket, blue t-shirt, climbing belts, two pairs of shorts(as would runner or a climber have) and an old german boots.

hope you like him! :)

04 April 2010, 11:12 AM
very god damn cool. The new shading for the aliens is great! and the shading for the guy as well.

hope you finish in time:wip:

04 April 2010, 04:55 PM
Thank you, andreas! I'm working on it. At the moment I'm rendering characters separately from the ground and backgrounds. after that i'll render ground diffuses and post them.
long nights and no weekends :S

Hope that CGtalk will consider deadline extension for a week or soo :)

How does no end?

04 April 2010, 08:50 AM
How does no end?
if you mean trailer, then it doesn't end. Neither the story.

full trailer now is 45 sek, fast montage of action.
It's gonna be fun :)

04 April 2010, 11:33 AM

this is going better and better. This shot will be awsome. I can imagine it with quality you did for character composition test.

Thank you Staszek, of my 2.5minute previz I took the best shots together and got 45 sek. version of a salat. :) Usually I don't get that much in too details on the project, cause at the studio my work is 2d 3d style frames and general art direction.
But in the end we all get a good material to put in the portfolios or print on the wall. So everybody wins :)

04 April 2010, 05:17 PM
this project is shaping up to be pretty cool. the pre-viz animatic tells the story with some true epic sweep, and this last scene you're working on looks action-packed. I like the overall look of the arctic landscapes, especially in those early mattes. also, there's something about those aliens...maybe it's their weird-looking heads, maybe it's their inverted nipples, but their design sits somewhere on the edge of both funny and disturbing, which I think works well for the B-movie theme. the modelling and texturing of the main character is very good, as well. hopefully you have enough time to give this project the level of polish you are aiming for. good luck!

04 April 2010, 08:01 PM
Thank you nucron. that is my exact point that characters and their actions will give a b-movie, not noise-grayscale or bad quality.
About the alien, it or he doesnt have inverted nipples :) it's a nose. when i modeled it the face had to resemble pacmans head with out a nose. And when i got to modeling the body, I thought of making some alien features and the nose seamed to be the most suitable feature on chest near the lungs.
I can imagine how funny and weird it would be if alien stars sneazing.

at the moment i have ca 6 sekonds rendered of a 45 sek trailer. S Lots of work

04 April 2010, 06:23 AM
it or he doesnt have inverted nipples :) it's a nose. This is probably the weirdest sentence on this forum. :)

How are things coming up? Are you able to meet the deadline?

04 April 2010, 06:57 AM
Yes probably it is the weirdest sentence and character also. character does one thing more, this will be in the trailer. :)
Lots of shot I did didn't see the render, but i'll try to include them in the trailer anyway. All the action scenes are rendered, so no worries there :) at the moment I post all renders - killing the 3d look.

thx for support!

Hello and good luck to all participants who are reading my thread. It's was really challanging for me to finish this project. Hope you like it!
I didn't make quite detailed making of, but if there's something interesting to you let me know I'll show how I made it. And for now I'll go to sleep - I've been working on HOH since friday non stop.

btw HOH is in HD! I'll post HD version later. Good luck and good night!

04 April 2010, 06:32 AM
Hahahaha i come to work, make a cup of coffee, open CGTalk forum and find this :) You did an excellent job.
Too bad that many pre-viz shots did not reach to final version due to the time constraints. It would have given a better idea about the whole "no water on earth" conflict, but its still better to have more quality than quantity and there is only so much a one man can do.
By the way the shot with that alien and his tongue is very disturbing and i also loved the sequence where the hero was running and ice was breaking behind.

What makes me extremely happy is that this is the first time (as far as i know) when someone represents Estonian country in serious CG related event :)

I sincerely hope to see your work in one of the winners category.
Good luck.

PS. I envy your skills

04 April 2010, 02:59 PM
Thank you Poirot! It's not a first time somebody from Estonia does something like this. :)
I did very serious mistake when I started the project, I had so many ideas and developments so that I began animating and modeling everything. I had a spaceship with a basic rig, fisher man character, boats, insects, grass, plastic bottle, environments. After finishing pre-viz I realized that I'm never gonna finish this in time. Then I minimized the story.
live and learn :)

04 April 2010, 03:03 PM
I did same mistake in previous challenge.

But you tryed and learned a lot of new things for sure.

04 April 2010, 08:46 PM
Very good work anton.Excellent renders and very good approach from the directors view.
Congratulations my friend and yes the best are all of us.
