Hello everyone

It's great to be here again. We are entering as a team and targeting a full CG product this time! Concepts and story are currently in process, we will start posting them real soon.
Best of luck to everyone!

Here is the story, final version :)

Establishing: Exterior night shot, under moon light. Wide static shot of an abandoned cathedral in the middle of a jungle, in front of it, there is a grave yard, and a few trucks have already pulled in the scene with their front lights towards the cathedral. One man and his dog are in forefront approaching the door of the cathedral. In the foreground there is a gate of the grave yard, a note engraved on top of it directs not to enter because of the monster in the cathedral.
Eyes: Interior, inside the cathedral, looking out of the window there is the silhouette of the beast in the foreground, man and his dog are approaching, and his gun is pointing down. Camera defocuses on the glass itself (stained) we see the eyes of the beast, he then moves out of the camera.
Approach: Exterior, low angle camera sees manís legs and his dog reaching the gate, he pushes the door by his gun.
Crash! Extreme low angle, camera sees the dog, the man and the beast that crashes through a window. Shot goes into slow motion as he passes by the moon and land on the floor, camera follows him during this.
Run: Same angle of the last cameraís ending, with the beast in the same pose where he landed, he starts running, cars pass on top the camera, the hot pursuit starts
Track: Camera pans between trees as the beast is running, shot ends as the beast and the truck are on the two far ends of the shot, their distance is almost 3 trucks, Carís front lights are on the floor.
Reveal: Front camera looking down their chase, it tilts down between a truck on the floor we see the beast running and the cars chasing him. Trucks are closer to him now.
Steering, ĺ camera sees the truck steering away to avoid hitting the trunk.
Gun: Beast clears the felled tree, low angle camera, one of his feet lands next to camera and passes by, on his back a gunshot lights the whole jungle for a second and we see the silhouette of the dogs.
Jump: ĺ view of a cliff that divides jungle into two sides, the beast jump over it and makes it to the other side, tree breaks and falls, the dogs jump as well, one makes it and the other fails.
Hero: Back view of the man, looking at the other side of the jungle, the howling sound of a dying dog is heard. He is holding something in his hand and looking at it.
Hand: Close up of the manís hand holding a silver bullet.
Reaction: Mid view of the man, he fists his hand; his look is wise and calm.

Here's the werewolf character in low-poly. Modeled in Maya, tweaked in Zbrush. About to begin the high-poly sculpt.

Hey Guys,

I was very impressed by your last challenge video!!
And I believe your going to do a great entry on this one also.
Very nice progress, keep on posting!

Best of luck!

Hey Thiago. Thanks for the support...btw, checked out ur portfolio, sick stuff man! really really nice :D

http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/27/19236/19236_1265826809_medium.jpg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1MKOfOXDao)

We needed to fix the topologies in more than a 100 pieces of trees (roots and branches), models coming from Zbrush have really distorted topologies and zbrush tools aren't actually as fast or intuitive as those in Maya, that's why we decided to make a tiny .mel that does a re-topology. Later on we'll take the new branches back to Zbrush and paint the displacements maps.
There must be more intuitive methods out there, but i tried to come up with my own solution and it's working pretty well!

Comments are welcome!

This is the video of the solution we came up with for properly positioning the tree roots on the terrain, it uses a combination of joints, rigid bodies and dynamic constraints.

It looks good but the truck is completely stuck to the ground. Maybe you can add a second layer for the animation to lift the truck a little when it turns and to make it "jiggle" left to right.

best way to make your lights look natural it's to look for a refference in a real life.
http://media.photobucket.com/image/night%20moon/theophania3/lunar/dark-night-full-moon.jpg - here is the example
http://images2.layoutsparks.com/1/114294/dark-forest-queen-night.jpg - here are the colors I'd suggest :)

one thing you should also pay attention to is silhouettes. At the moment it is quite hard to understand what is what in your scene.

DOF is faked, in still image it's okay but in animation it will get out eventually.

02-24-2010, 11:06 AM
Hey Digi, rest assured..this is a very, very, very rough lighting test put together in photoshop to find our colors:).....the scene is a good 80% incomplete. But thanks for the advice.

I would whack a quick deformer on each of the pillars and line them up a little and give them some diversity. They feel like clones right now.

02-25-2010, 05:17 PM
cool modeling. cant wait to see it with textures and shaders.

in your previous post you mentioned about rough testing of all elemtens together with lighting. Best is to make such tests with material(shader) overide, grey ( rgb128.128128). Then you can clearly see how light occure things. To not lost later color inforamtion because of perfect black and to not get overbrighten in other places. On medium grey all its well seen,

That vine maker is pretty sweet. I am making a short film at the moment here at Vancouver Film School. Is it possibly that I could try out that vine maker??

nice dogs animation
maybe You should try add some camera shake- this will make picture more dynamic

03-27-2010, 08:18 AM

It obvious there is alot of hard work gone into the production here and I feel your great job with the backgrounds and environments is let down by this animation. I know the deadline is fast approaching but the animation needs some revising with wieghting especially, or as mention use camera shake to fudge over the animation if you simply do not have time.

Good luck, though, artistically it looks lovely

You are right, animation isn't great, it's just that animation isn't our strength in here :( we have only one person working on animation , actually only one of us knows how to animate, to top that up, we are using a crowd simulator to generate many dogs that itself introduces a brand new set of obstacles, the only revision i can see happening at the moment is to add the shake, and also adopt the dogs to the terrain. other than I am afraid we have to live with it. :( ..

thanks for the suggestion guys, really it's quite helpful..

Hey, thank you so much Ishan for your support, like some others mentioned, some of the winners are a surprise, to me some are actually shocking, but hey, we all agreed to leave it all up to the judges, I am sure they've considered a lot of thing while judging, after all it was fun and we learned a lot.
